Joan Pennington JellemaJoan Pennington Jellema, 90, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Josie Harper Hospice in Omaha, NE.Joan Snyder, daughter of Earl and Minnie (Bossman) Snyder, was born on October 22, 1926, in Horicon, WI. She grew up there and graduated from high school before attending the American Academy of Horology in Denver, CO, where she met Donald Pennington.Joan was united in marriage with Donald Pennington on June 21, 1947, in Colorado Springs, CO. The couple moved briefly to Parker, SD, and then to Sioux Falls, SD, where they began to raise a family. Joan began a clerical position at Sioux Valley Hospital where she continued until retiring in 1998.Donald passed away on June 10, 1998.Joan remained in Sioux Falls and was united in marriage with Tom Jellema on October 11, 2003. The couple later moved to Mesa, AZ.Joan was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and was active in the Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary.Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Tom Jellema, Mesa, AZ; sons Michael Pennington and his wife Patricia, Prior Lake, MN, Daniel Pennington and his wife Johnell, Bennington, NE, Thomas Pennington, Tampa, FL; daughter Jeanie Driscoll and her husband Joel, Versailles, MO; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by step children Judy and her husband Steve Kerkvilet, McKinney, TX, Jolene and her husband Brian Howard, Carlisle, PA, Janet and her husband Joel Steffen, Sioux Falls, SD, Tom Jellema Jr., Sioux Falls, SD, seven step grandchildren, eleven step great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald Pennington; and brothers Reed, Wayne, and Donald Snyder.The family requests that memorials be directed to the First United Methodist Church.Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 6 pm on Friday, January 20, 2017, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 South Main Avenue. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
