Joan Regina Young, 79, a resident of Grasonville, MD and previously of Edgewater, MD, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2016 surrounded by her family at the Heartland House in Grasonville. Joan was born on July 10, 1937 in Washington, D.C. to the late Joseph and Catherine Moore Flaherty. Joan was a sweet and caring lady with a great sense of humor and wit who was very devoted to her family and friends. She was an avid reader and a great cook, and enjoyed sewing, card games, singing, dancing and gardening. She worked as a parish secretary for 18 years for Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Edgewater. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her daughter, Stacey Boyd and her brothers; Robert, Sr. and Patrick Flaherty, Sr. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Earle Young, Jr., her children; Stephen (Lisa) Young of Stevensville, MD, Deborah (Carl) Schanberger of Tracey's Landing, MD and Kelly(Patrick) Day of Lusby, one brother; Michael Flaherty, her grandchildren; Ryan Schanberger, Donovan and Bryce Young, Ashley Coates, Allison Kingsley, Katelyn Uhl, and her great-granddaughter Grace Anne Kingsley. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joan's life on Friday from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, 8085 Saltsburg Rd, Suite 201, Pittsburgh, PA 15239.
