LENEXA-Danneberg, Joan Wharton Mary Joan (Jo) Wharton Danneberg, 90, passed away on December 4, 2015, at home. Joan was born on August 7, 1925, in Blackwell, OK to Gertrude and George A. Wharton, the third of four children. She grew up in Hutchinson and Wichita, KS. She attended the University of Kansas, where she was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority. She moved to Kanas City, MO where she became a commercial artist illustrating jewelry and fashion in newspaper advertisements. While in Kansas City, she met her husband John R. Danneberg, and in 1951, they were married. They lived in Kansas City, Prairie Village and Lake Quivira before moving to Wichita in 1963. She finished her college degrees while in Wichita, earning a BFA and Bachelor of Art Education, at Wichita State University. She was an art teacher in the Wichita Public School system for 5 years. Joan was a prolific painter and sculptor, who painted right up to the last day of her life. She has been represented in the "An American in Paris" exhibit in France, She was a founding charter member of Gallery XII, a co-op woman owned gallery in downtown Wichita. She has had many one-artist shows in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington DC, California, and New York throughout her long career. Her works have been included in numerous exhibits and won several awards. Besides being an accomplished Artist, Joan will always be remembered by her family as a wonderful mother, a devoted wife, and a dedicated caregiver to her disabled husband. She was a member of Village Presbyterian church and a volunteer at the food pantry for many years. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, John R. Danneberg. She is survived by her daughter, Kristine Danneberg Swords and husband Jim. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, at the Village Presbyterian Church Chapel, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66206. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Food Pantry at Village Presbyterian Church.
