Joe Atencio, 83, a lifetime resident of Las Vegas, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.He was born on April 17, 1933, in Gallinas to Eugenio Atencio and Maria Sandoval Atencio. He served in the United States Army from May 21, 1953, to April 26, 1955. Joe married the love of his life, Mary Ann (Nancy) in July 1955. They went on to raise six children. His family was always first and foremost in his life.He taught his children and grandchildren the meaning of hard work, respect, to love life and to appreciate everything you had.He loved the outdoors, specifically the Gallinas Canyon area where, he was born and raised. He was a jack of all trades and a perfectionist in everything that he did. He loved to travel and get to know different places. He loved music and would play his guitar as often as possible. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann "Nancy" Atencio; daughter, Catherine Atencio-Segura; grandson, Christopher Gallegos; son-in-law, Marshall Gutierrez; parents, Eugenio and Maria Atencio; and in-laws, Demecio and Guadalupita (Pita) Duran.He is survived by his daughters, Josie Torres and husband, David, of Española, Reina Gallegos and husband, Tim, of Las Vegas, Mary Louise Lovato and husband, Ernest, of Las Vegas, and Brenda Gutierrez of Fayetteville, Ga.; son, Jason Atencio and wife, Vanessa, of Cleveland, Bernadette and Isaiah Montoya of Las Vegas; kitty companion, Girlie; grandchildren, Shannon Saiz and husband, Adam, Pamela Sue Gallegos, Thomas Gallegos, Brittany Lovato, Joshua Torres, Nick Gutierrez and wife, Kelly, Stephanie Gannon and husband, Sean, Jared Atencio, Isaiah Atencio, Diego Atencio and Jaselynn (Marianna) Atencio; great-grandchildren, Samantha Romero, Krysten Romero, Jaiden Saiz, Zoe Gutierrez, Andrew Gutierrez, Destiny Gannon, Reagan Gannon, Rebecca Gannon and Maddison Lovato; brother, Ted Atencio and Inez of Highland, Calif.; sister, Gloria Trujillo and husband, Matt, of Pueblo, Colo.; brothers-in-law, John A. Duran and wife, Loretta, of Las Vegas, and Tony Duran and wife, Grace, of Roswell; special cousin, Herman Martinez of Gallinas; personal caregivers, Roberta Fernandez, Emilio Roybal and Lorenzo Martinez; a special thanks to Ambercare staff, Deanne Tapia and Ember Davis; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.Public viewing was held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Rogers Mortuary Chapel in Las Vegas with prayer service following at 7 p,m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) also at Rogers Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Tim Lucero officiating. Cremation will take place after Prayer Service. Interment will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
