John A. Campbell 1967-2016 49, passed away suddenly on Dec. 11, 2016. He was born on Nov. 16, 1967, the son of the late William E. and Donna Faye Campbell. John had been Sheriff Maier's chief deputy at the Stark County Sheriff Department since February 2015. Before joining the staff, he retired from the Ohio Investigative Unit - formerly known as the Ohio Department of Liquor Control. In December 2013, John was named assistant deputy director and agent-in-charge of the Ohio Investigative Unit's Canton, Toledo and Cleveland districts. John joined the Ohio Investigative Unit in June 1992 and was assigned to the Akron district office. He became assistant agent-in-charge of the Cleveland district office in 2000 and agent-in-charge there in 2003. He graduated from Traynor's Basic Police Academy in Massillon in 1987. John worked as a sheriff deputy in Carroll County from 1987 to 1991 and in Wayne County in 1991 and 1992, and completed training at the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville in 2002 where he became a Kentucky Colonel. During his career, John received the Life Saving Award from the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association, and in 1999 he received a certificate of exceptional duty from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. John spent his life making many happy memories for his family and friends. He had a kind heart and a warm smile for everyone he met. His greatest joy and love was being with his family and he loved them unconditionally. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Randy Amelung. John is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Tami L. Campbell; sons, John M. (fiance Hannah Carrel) Campbell and Joshua A. Campbell; siblings: Rick Amelung, Gloria Cress, Sue (Jess) Paxson, Lynn (Sara) Campbell and Donna Streight; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Reed Funeral Home (NORTH CANTON CHAPEL, 801 Pittsburg Ave. N.W.) where services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. F.O.P.
