John Archie Nance was called home to rest on May 25, 2020 at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina after a long battle with bone cancer. Archie, as he was so affectionately called, was the son of the late Mary Helen Chisholm and her husband Ulysses Chisholm. He attended Second Ward Senior High School where he was an excellent football player. Archie graduated in June 1968 and entered the Marine Corps on January 8, 1969.Archie served in the Marine Corps with distinction for nearly thirty years. During his tour in Vietnam, he participated in several major combat operations against enemy forces. On August 24, 1969, he was wounded during a joint operation with the U.S. Army in the village of Anwar. Archie earned several medals, including the Purple Heart. He received other commendations for his dedication and bravery. Archie was a faithful man of God. He was a dedicated steward and was committed to many leadership positions in the church . In his spare time, Archie conducted weekly Bible study at the Brian Center Health and Rehab in Charlotte and ministered to and fed the homeless. Archie never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with a smile. His most famous greetings that will never be forgotten were, "Praise the Lord" and "Keep that Joy." Archie will be greatly missed by all! To forever cherish his memory, Archie leaves behind a loving and devoted wife of twenty-one years, Betty Elaine Nance; one daughter, Velvet Bailey; three sons, Tommy Nance, Jamikequez Nance, Mikyel Nance; two step sons, Shameko “Rico” Straite and his wife, Francilla, James Houck of Alaska; four grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
