John Bertrand Mudd Jr., 84, died peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.He was born on December 28, 1930, in Fredericktown, to John Bertrand Mudd Sr. and Mary Prudence Carrico Mudd. He was a 1949 graduate of Fredericktown High School. He served in the United States Army where he was stationed in Japan and then fought in the
Korean War. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1957. After graduation he worked for Begley Drug Co. and Grider Pharmacy in Danville. In 1968 the family moved to Bardstown where he was a partner and pharmacist at Hurst Drug Store until the time of his retirement. He was active member of the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a Kentucky Colonel.He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Francis, Robert, and Paul Mudd; and two daughters, Carol Frances Mudd and Cherri Mudd Tudor.Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Alice Gertrude Johnson Mudd; two daughters, Connie (Gary) Newton, of Elizabethtown and Cathy (Bill) Waldschmidt, of Springfield; two sons, Mike (Rachel) Mudd, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Chris (Lori) Mudd, of Bardstown; eight grandchildren, Josh (Graham) Mudd, Catie Mudd, Jason Newton, Patrick Mudd, Christina Mudd, Henry Waldschmidt, George (Angie) Waldschmidt and Liz (Mark) McNulty; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margie Spalding, of Bardstown, and Mary Rose Ziegler, of Louisville; and two brothers, Phil (Leon) Mudd, of Louisville, and Jim Mudd, of Bardstown.The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, and 9-10:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Barlow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Elementary School or Bethlehem High School in memory of Mr. Mudd.
