Dr. John C. Hardin, Jr.April 21,1925-May 11,2017Dr. John C. Hardin, Jr. passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at the age of 92, after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, at Osborn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017, in the Chapel of Osborn. Officiating will Rev. Conrad Edwards.John was born to Dr. John C. Hardin, Sr. and Sadie Kendrick Hardin on April 21, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nona June Hardin; and his brother, Dr. William Kendrick Hardin. He is survived by his wife, Lera Quay Hardin; son, Dr. John C. Hardin, III and wife, Sally Hope Hardin; and grandchildren, Michelle Hope Hardin and John C. Hardin, IV. Also surviving him is his sister-in-law, Margaret Lieux Hardin; two nephews, William Kendrick Hardin, Jr. and Grant Kendrick Hardin; and a niece, Ivey Kendall Hardin. He is also survived by his nephew, Jerry Ryan Smith. Dr. Hardin was born on April 21, 1925, in Smackover, Arkansas where his father was practicing dentistry during the oil boom. He and his family moved to Shreveport, LA when he was two-years-old. He graduated from Byrd High School, then attended Centenary College for two and a half years until he was accepted in the dental school at Loyola University in New Orleans. He graduated in 1946 and then subsequently decided that he wanted to attend medical school after his sister died at the age of 14 from head and neck cancer. He was accepted at the University of Tennessee Medical School and graduated second in his class in 1950. It was while in Memphis that he met the love of his life and wife-to-be, Quay. They were married on December 26 in 1949 at the First United Methodist Church of Memphis. He then moved back to Shreveport in 1950 and did an internship and the first year of his general surgery residency at what was then known as Confederate Memorial Medical Center and is now University Health. In 1952 he joined the military as a Captain in the United States Air Force and was chief of all surgical services at Stewart Air Force Base in Tennessee from 1952 until 1954. He then resumed his residency at Confederate Memorial Center finishing in 1956. He then started his private practice Shreveport, LA in 1956 limited to Maxillofacial, Oral, and Plastic Surgery. He closed his practice in September of 1993 and then became a clinical professor at LSU Medical Center where he continued to be active until the age of 86. During his medical career he was quite productive. He published 23 papers. He was president of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery in 1977, a Fellow of American College of Surgery, American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, and the Shreveport Medical Society. He was a truly gifted surgeon and helped many people along the way.He was also a 32° Mason of the Scottish Rite and was a member of the El Karubah Shrine Temple. In 1995 his wife Quay began to develop the first signs of Alzheimer's disease. He cared for her with great devotion for almost 20 years until he was no longer able to care for himself. He continued to work as a professor of surgery at LSU Medical Center until the later years. John also actively participated in Sunday School and Worship at Broadmoor Methodist Church initially in his childhood and later into his adult years. The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Tom Reilly, Dr. Stuart Blum, Dr. David Green, Dr. Jim Cotter, Dr. Don Posner and his devoted care-taker, sitter, and friend for many years, Mary Dooley. Great appreciation and thanks is also extended to his other sitters, Nichole Dooley, Maria Mitchell, Ella Patterson, Sylvia Lindsey, and Shalonda Dotie, as well as the staff of Live Oak Retirement Center.In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home, the , or Broadmoor Methodist Church.
