John Carroll Dorman Obituary
May 05, 1942 - Jan 19, 2016
This obituary is administered by:
John Dorman Longtime Atascadero resident John Carroll Dorman, age 74, died on Saturday, November 19, 2016, after suffering complications of heart disease. John passed away surrounded by his loving family. The youngest of John and Carol (Jones) Dorman's three children, John was born on May 5, 1942 in Altadena, California. John spent most of his childhood in Pacific Grove, California. A mischievous child who pushed his mama's buttons frequently, John was a bit of a jokester. One of his favorite pranks was to light his older brother Bill's newspaper on fire, while he was still reading it. We won't repeat what Bill yelled at John, as this is a family newspaper. After graduating Pacific Grove High School in 1960, John worked as a firefighter for the California Department of Forestry, stationed in San Luis Obispo County, and later, for the City of Monterey, California. While working for the CDF, John met his beloved "main squeeze," Olive Ann Dempsey, on a blind date. They married in Monterey, California, on June 17, 1962. The only way to describe the love these two people shared is "A Grand Passion." John and Olive's 54-year partnership saw them through raising two children, restoring multiple cars and houses, travelling the country and world, and countless hours of laughter spent with family and friends. Feisty and unstoppable, John pursued his interests with passion. The ocean was a constant presence in his life, from cutting bait for the Monterey fishing boat fleet as a child to building and running his own commercial fishing boat for over two decades. Even when not on the water, he delighted in being outside, camping, hiking, or riding his motorcycle despite doctor's orders. A consummate craftsman, John was meticulous in his work. His main media were wood and metal, though he dabbled in photography and was a fair draftsman as well. He worked as a carpenter, and ended up building the house that he and Olive lived in for nearly 40 years. John loved automobiles, especially old cars, and took great pride in restoring them. At the time of his death, he was in the midst of restoring a '36 Ford flatbed pickup truck. One of the most remarkable of John's many accomplishments was his admission to college at the age of 54. In 1998, John graduated with an A.S. degree, becoming a registered nurse. After graduation, he enjoyed working with the mentally ill patients of Atascadero State Hospital. While John loved naps, Olive's apple pie, and listening to music of all kinds, his deepest passion in his life was his connection with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with family, whether it was sitting quietly together or attending huge family gatherings. John's irreverent sense of humor and silly antics earned the deep affection and love of his extended family, in particular his many nieces and nephews who adore their Uncle John. (Please do not ask about the incident involving whiskey and unfortunately sized Speedosthese are things that cannot be unseen.) John is survived by his wife Olive; his children Christine (Jerry) Dorman- Hansen and Matthew (Laura) Dorman; grandchildren Emily and Archer Hansen, Kate and Grant Dorman; siblings Teresa (Richard) Kuhn, William (Pat) Dorman, and Irene Dorman; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00pm, Sunday, November 27, 2016, at Kuehl-Nicolay Chapel in Paso Robles. Funeral Services will be held at Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atascadero at 1:00pm, Monday, November 28, 2016, with burial to follow at Atascadero District Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles, Calif. Sign his guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries
