John D. Griffin, 92, formerly of Gainesville, Florida, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2010 at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, Tennessee. Mr. Griffin was born on February 22, 1918 in Marbury, Alabama. Mr. Griffin served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the China Burma India Theater receiving three combat campaign badges. He was a Field Artillery Officer with the Mars Task Force, receiving a Combat Infantry badge as a replacement for Merrill's Marauders.Mr. Griffin graduated from Auburn University in l941 and was a federal employee for more than thirty-five years, serving 25 years with the United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service in Ocala, Palatka, and Lake City, Florida. He served in Gainesville as SCS Agronomist for the State of Florida. Since moving to East Tennessee in 2002 to be closer to family, he was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Kingsport and later of Central Baptist Church in Johnson City. Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters, and an infant daughter, Linda Carolyn Griffin. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lena Hagerty Griffin, sons John P. Griffin of Dayton, TX, Richard D. Griffin of Alexandria, VA, daughters Janet L. Griffin of Asheville, NC, Sue Lockett of Johnson City, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, TN. Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 2:00 pm till 4:00 pm. A graveside service for Mr. John D. Griffin will be conducted on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, TN. Military honors will be provided by Boone Dam Post #4933.
