John Elliott Hoag, 87, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on November 21, 2016, surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes Rd., KCMO. Visitation 5 – 7 p.m. Monday at the McGilley State Line Chapel, preceded by a rosary at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ladies of Charity USA (LCUSA) Caregiving Project, 850 Main St., Kansas City, MO 64105. John was born on March 6, 1929 in Rochester, NY, to John Kenneth and Anita Vossbrinck Hoag. He grew up in Woodbury, NJ. After graduating from Woodbury High School, he entered the Air Force in 1946, where he did an extended tour in Bermuda. He married the love of his life, Doris Cerpiot, on September 29, 1951. He graduated from Parks College of St. Louis University in 1952, where he was a member of Phi Alpha Chi Fraternity. He worked for Trans World Airlines (TWA) for 36 years, beginning as a flight engineer on the Connie and retiring as a Captain flying the Boeing 767's. He developed his love of flying at an early age, taking his first plane ride at the age of ten. In 1989, he was honored as "Captain of the Year" for TWA. Following retirement, he spent time playing golf, traveling the globe with Doris, and visiting children and grandchildren. Family was very important to him. He loved to take family vacations, play cards and dominos, and dance with his wife. He loved to have fun. John also volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Red Bridge Chapter of the Lions Club. He was a member of Visitation Parish for 25 years before moving to St. Thomas More Parish. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Audrey (Hoag) Cundey and Marcia (Hoag) Halterman; grandson Alex Hoag and son-in-law Ron Farris, MD. He is survived by his ten children, Suzanne (Roger) Johnson, Carole Petty, Anita Farris, Jeanne (John) Devero, Barbara (Kevin) Mullane, Mary Jo Briones, Ruth (Barry) Rowe, Libby (John) Herring, Michael Hoag, Jimmy (Jenny) Hoag, 37 grandchildren and 22 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Carole McClurken and Shirley Peschke. Many thanks to John's caregivers and Heartland Hospice for the loving care they gave to our Dad.
