John F. Hogan IIIVero Beach, FLJohn F. Hogan III (Jack) peacefully passed away while at the VNA Hospice House of Vero Beach on February 23, 2017 at the age of 83. Jack will always be known for his outgoing personality, friendly smile and great sense of humor. He resided in Vero Beach, FL after retiring there from Westfield, NJ.Jack was born on November 8, 1933 in Norristown, PA to Veronica and John F. Hogan II. He graduated from Norristown High School and later, Penn State University. Jack was on his high school baseball team and also played in the American Legion league. While at Penn State, he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and the Penn State Lacrosse team. He studied Chemical Engineering and graduated in 1955. Jack was a life-long Nittany Lion fan and was able to attend many football games as an alumni. On most fall Saturday afternoons, he could be found watching his football team play on television while wearing his Penn State shirt. He was a Nittany Lion Club and Penn State Alumni Association life member.Jack served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1962 as a Lieutenant in the Communications Division. Jack became a naval officer after completing Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I. He was stationed in Hawaii and California and spent a month-long tour of the Pacific SE with Admiral H.G. Hopwood. He was attached to the USS Thetis Bay helicopter carrier. Later in life, he continued his involvement with the Navy by joining the Navy League, Treasure Coast Council in Vero, Beach, FL., where he served on the board of directors. Jack was recently honored by the VNA for his military service.Jack married his wife of 60 years, Joan Walker Hogan, also of Norristown, PA, in 1956. She was the center of his life and their marriage bond remained strong over the years. After several years in Cincinnati, OH with Sun Oil Company, the Hogans transferred to Westfield, NJ, where they lived for 38 years. He and Joan were members of the Westfield Tennis Club and Echo Lake Country Club where they spent many hours of social (and competitive) play. Jack was a sales and marketing manager for Sun Oil for 20 years and a global sales manager for Witco Chemical Corp. for 25 years. His business took him to international locations, such as Russia, Australia and England. Jack always excelled in business negotiations with his clients. He officially retired but remained as a consultant for Witco for two more years. In 1998, the Hogans moved to Grand Harbor in Vero Beach, FL. Jack enjoyed playing golf and bocce with his friends at Grand Harbor as well as attending meetings of the Grand Harbor Audubon Club. He also made annual trips to watch spring training games of his beloved New York Mets in nearby Port St. Lucie. He and his wife enjoyed traveling abroad, most recently to Spain/Portugal and a trip to Ireland with their daughters. Jack was always proud of his Irish heritage and was thrilled to travel to the land of his relatives. Jack and Joan enjoyed performances at Riverside Theatre, Space Coast Symphony and the Distinguished Speaker series. They are members of St. Mark's Anglican Church in Vero Beach, FL. Jack volunteered and held leadership roles in various civic and charitable organizations in Westfield and Vero Beach, such as the Westfield Jaycees, the Joint Civic Committee, the Indian River Neighborhood Association, Christ Church and Trinity Episcopal Church. After Hurricanes Frances and Jean hit the area, Jack was in charge of the roof restoration for the Newport Island Homeowner's Association. He was a member of the Eagle Society for the Indian River Medical Center. Jack is survived by his wife Joan, daughters Valerie Hogan Casillas (David) of Dallas, TX, Kimberly Hogan of San Francisco, CA and grandson, Kyle John Casillas. Jack's family meant everything to him and he had an especially close relationship with his two daughters. He loved to listen to Kim play the piano. He was extremely proud of his grandson's accomplishments in school, on the lacrosse field and in the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Anglican Church, 1795 45th Street, Vero Beach, FL on March 2, 2017 at 11 am. A reception will follow at Grand Harbor Golf and Beach Club. Memorial donations may be made to the Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program, the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County or a .Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
