John Miley KurtzNashville, TNJohn Miley Kurtz passed away peacefully on January 1, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 5, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa to Louis Clarence and Helen Margaret (Miley).John graduated from St Augustine grade school and Dowling Catholic high school in Des Moines where he became an all-city tight end. He entered ROTC at The
University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1955 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He then earned a master's degree in business administration at the University of Tennessee in 1975.In 1956 he married Patricia Anne Kestler, also from Des Moines. He entered the Navy where he attained the rank of lieutenant, junior grade aboard the USS Gunston Hall LSD-5. After leaving the Navy, he was in management with the family business of the L.H. Kurtz company of Des Moines, Mason City, and Sioux City, Iowa. In 1970 he moved to Nashville Tennessee, and worked at Xerox and Heil Quaker/Intercity Products until his retirement in 1992. His greatest loves included his faith, his family, his cigars, and spending time at his cabin on Pine Island at Lake Vermillion in northern Minnesota. A fixture on Pine Island for his entire life, he was lovingly known as the "Old Man of the Lake", sought after for his extensive knowledge of the lake's best fishing holes.John is survived by his wife, Pat, his sister Mary Alice Kurtz-Mitchell, and his children: John Michael (Maria), Bryan Richard (Michelle), Timothy Charles (Maggie), Mary Patricia (Peter), David Miley (Lisa); Grandchildren: Justin Michael (Andrea), Mary Lauren, Claire Elise Nelson (Matthew), Emily Anne, Annie Maura, Cullen Patrick Moran, Connor Kurtz Moran, John Charles, John Brady, Katherine Rois Moran, Zachary William, Cecelia Marie, Emma Miley, Joseph Patrick, and Landon Joseph; his step-grandchildren Peter Reynolds Bream, III, Henry Fletcher Bream, William Walter Bream; and his great-grandchildren Jacob Miley, Mattox Dale, Sean Mabini, and Charlotte Deanna Bream.John was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Louis, Robert, Nancy (Arkwright), Helen Claire (Silstrop), and granddaughter Elizabeth Marie.Visitation will be Friday, January 6, 2017 at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Avenue North, Nashville, from 4-7 pm. A rosary will be held at 6:00 pm. The funeral Mass will be Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:00am, in the chapel at St. Henry's Catholic Church, 6401 Harding Pike, Nashville. A memorial service will be held January 14 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 545 42nd Street, Des Moines, IA.
