Palme, John R.John R. Palme, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 12, 1926 in Corning, the son of Joseph and Helen (McAvoy) Palme. He was married to Lucy A. Schubmehl for 65 years. She predeceased him on December 26, 2012. John attended parochial school in Corning, and graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1943. He attended Penn State University and then enlisted in the US Navy and was sent to Penn State Navy V-12 program for Officer Training during WWII. He was discharged from the Navy with a medical disability, returning to Penn State, graduating in 1947 with a Bachelor's Degree in Pre Law. He joined Corning Glass in 1947, married Lucy A. Schubmehl in Corning, on Thanksgiving Day of that year, and left for assignment at the Corning Plant in Muskogee, OK. When that plant closed, he returned to Corning, and was assigned to the Executive Training Program, becoming the Personnel Assistant at Pressware, followed by Human Relations Training in the Old Main Plant. He was transferred to Danville, KY as a Personnel Supervisor. While there, he and Mrs. Palme headed the Danville High School PTA when the school was integrated. He returned to Corning after a brief assignment in Bluffton, IA, then joined the Industrial Engineering Department while updating the Suggestion System. He was reassigned to the Employee Benefits Group in the Pension Department, was made supervisor of the Worker's Compensation Office, retiring in 1984, following a lengthy career in Human Relations. John was a communicant of St. Michael's Parish in Penn Yan and served as chairman of the Self Insurers Association of NY, after appointment by Gov. Mario Cuomo. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Corning Lions Clubs, and the Penn State Alumni Association. In his spare time, John lived full time on Keuka Lake where he enjoyed sailing and boating.He is survived by his children, John (Kim Ball) Palme Jr. of Horseheads, Luanne Palme of Canandaigua, and Quinton (Nancy) Palme of Cohocton; sister, Marianne (Arthur) Rutan of Corning; grandchildren, Whitney Palme, Joseph Palme, Helen (Rory Campbell) O'Connell, and Lissa (Stephanie Danis) O'Connell; great grandchildren, Molly and Brodie O'Connell-Campbell; and many nieces and nephews.Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. A celebration of John's life will follow there at 2:00 pm. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery.
