November 6, 1938 - November 14, 2016John R. Russell, age 78, passed away on November 14, 2016 at his home in San Antonio, TX. John was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary Russell. He is survived by his brother Larry Russell, his daughter Theresa Fossier, his son John Robert Russell II and his granddaughters Mary (Ellie) Fossier and Taylor Russell.John was born on November 6, 1938 in McAlester, OK and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Accounting and "Letters". He was a Speed Reader who quickly absorbed a variety of subjects including Accounting, English, Opera, and other Fine Arts.His first employment was in Wyoming with Pan American, the Amoco predecessor. There he developed an affinity for the outdoors. In later years this love was exhibited by his formation of a large Exotic Game Reserve in Karnes County, Texas.John left Pan Am in the mid 1960's for a short period of service with Adams Resources. In 1968 he joined the financial sector of Western Geophysical Company. His unique skills soon became apparent and he was named the CFO. When Western and Atlas merged in 1987 John became the Executive Vice President of newly formed Western Atlas. In 1991 he became President and CEO of Western Atlas.In the 1990's John concluded that some industry consolidation was going to be essential for survival. An opportunity arose in 1998 with the Baker Hughes purchase of Western Atlas. After a short period of service with the new organization John retired and spent the next years attending to personal financial interests.In addition to his obvious business acumen John was a thoroughly engaging personality. By giving generously often and always anonymously he touched many lives. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and shared this passion with his son. He was a generous grandfather who shared his love of travel with his entire family.
