Atkinson, John S. "Stan"John S. "Stan" Atkinson, aged 95, of Algoma, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 12, 2017. He was born on August 1, 1922 in Highland Park, Michigan, where he spent his youth, then graduated from Highland Park High School in 1940. John joined the
United States Navy in 1942. He was on active duty during
World War II, serving on on the USS Windham Bay CVE-92 aircraft carrier as Electrician for Interior Communications. He was discharged in 1946, then was recalled to active duty during the
Korean Conflict.After his Naval service, John pursued a career in electrical engineering; founding, working, and retiring as Plant Manager and Vice President of GEMCO Electric Company of Detroit, Michigan. John retired to Kewaunee, Wisconsin, where he and Lucile restored a Victorian home which was then placed in the Marquette Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. After this accomplishment, John helped to restore and refurbish the WWII US
Army Tug Ludington which is now displayed in the Kewaunee harbor.John is survived by his wife, Lucile Ann Atkinson. John is further survived by:Daughter Karen A. Atkinson, PhD, DHmo. Daughter Dr. Holly G. Atkinson and husband Rev. Dr. Galen Guengerich. Daughter Melanie Atkinson and husband Ponnia Ilavarasan, granddaughter Uma Ilavarasan and grandson Amu Ilavarasan. Granddaughter Maile (Atkinson) Branson and husband Derrick Branson. Grandson Dylan David-John Atkinson. Daughter-in-law Shannon (Crowell) DeMaster and husband Doug DeMaster. Beloved niece Jill Blixt and family. John is further mourned by:Stepson Ken Short, Frank O'Bannon, granddaughters Janelle Flintrop, Krysten Bonham, grandson Kevin O'Bannon, granddaughters Cali Henry and Jenna Henry; great grandchildren Rhiannon, Korynne and Austin Flintrop; great grandchild Kaymarie Rayelle O'Bannon; nephew Matt Henry, sister-in-law Marvella Witt and family, Heinrich and Ulla Horstmeyer and family, Wayne and Jaki Turk, and Joe and Gloria Gerrits. John was predeceased by his son Marlin John Atkinson, PhD.Friends and family will gather at the chapel in the Evergreen Cemetery, Highway 54, Algoma for fellowship at 2:00 pm on Friday November 10, 2017 with military honors and interment at the gravesite immediately thereafter. In lieu of floral tributes, memorials to the American Legion or a are encouraged.
