A Life well Lived

John S. Lloyd passed away peacefully on September 20, 2022 in Bryn Mawr, PA. He was blessed to live a long, full life and remained of sound mind and spirit to the end.

John was born on February 24, 1937 to John S. Lloyd and Anne M. V. Bioren Lloyd in Philadelphia. He was the middle of three children with an older and a younger sister. John gained a beloved stepmother and stepsister when his mother died at an early age. He gained a beloved stepfather, stepbrother and stepsister only a few years later after the untimely death of his father. When John was in high school his family grew again when they welcomed a beloved first cousin who had been orphaned. John was married to and committed to the love of his life and his soulmate, Florence Hubbard (1937-2021), for nearly 60 years. John treasured the joys and responsibilities of being a devoted husband and a loving father. He is survived and celebrated by his children, their spouses and their children John Lloyd (Jack), Sheila Combs and Robert, William and Maya Lloyd; Maria Lloyd (Molly), Dan and Anne Reardon; Dr. Rebecca (Becky), David, Nicholas and Dawson DesRoches; and Thomas Lloyd (Tom), Alicia Segado, Pablo, Alexander and Sophia Lloyd and by his sisters Gladys Lloyd Bucove, Estelle (Mimi) Marshall, and Beverly Jones Pryor. He was preceded in death by his stepbrother Gordon Jones, his sister Nancy Lloyd Rieger, and his cousin Gardner S. Rogers.

John graduated with the Episcopal Academy class of 1955, earned a BA from Wesleyan University, class of 1959, an MBA from Drexel University and a CFA. Following his service in the US Navy, John worked as a financial analyst for 50 years. The combination of stewarding relationships along with stock analysis was a great match for him. After training at the Provident Bank, with the mentorship of a generous uncle, John founded a private investment firm, Lloyd Investments, Inc., in 1971. The firm grew to become Lloyd, Leith and Sawin and eventually was folded into Tower Bridge Advisors, whose president trained under the same mentor. John was engaged in the community and served on the boards of Overbrook School for the Blind and St. Peter’s School and the vestry of St. Peter’s Church.

His gentle, humble, kind, empathetic and peaceful nature attracted a bounty of deep friendships that rooted and nourished him throughout his life from tennis foursomes, to wine tasting clubs, to people who could appreciate a good laugh. He dearly loved and nurtured the friendships he made from all phases of his life.

John appreciated the glory of the natural world. He loved being attuned to the wind as it filled a sail or greeted him on an early morning bike ride. Cultivating his garden, from coleus to a Norfolk pine, was very satisfying for him. He appreciated the variety of grains in the woods he chose for woodworking. In his quiet way, he invited us all to join him in enjoying these simple pleasures so easily within our reach. He encouraged us to extend grace to one another.

He will be greatly missed by his large family and many, many friends.

Friends and family are invited to join the funeral service and interment on Saturday, November 26 at 11am at St. Peter’s Church (313 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106) or watch it live streamed at www.stpetersphila.org/. Donations can be made in his name to St. Peter’s Church.

Thank you so much for providing access to the beautiful service for John online. Our plan had been to come to the church, but we canceled that at the last minute due to colds. John was one of the most giving men that I have ever met. When I was looking for a job, he called me with suggestions. When he joined the Board of the Overbrook School for the Blind, he did so with such a commitment that he became Chairman in record time and successfully steared the school through choppy waters. He helped this world become a better place in many ways and will be missed by all. Stephen and Eileen Cleaves.

To John's Family, our sincere condolences. My wife and I met John in late 1985 around the time we were getting married and had decided we wanted to employ an investment advisor. We immediately clicked with him and joined Lloyd, Leith and Sawin and stayed with him, LLS and TBA since then. Overtime, he became more than an advisor. He saw our children grow and our first grandchildren too. Just as we saw the ever expanding holiday photos of the Lloyd family and talked with him about the interesting careers of his children. Thank you Jeannette. We just ate a picnic dinner at Independence Hall on Friday. You were on our minds. For some reason a potent memory was walking there with you and your parents in a snowstorm. It was just the 4 of us and so peaceful how the snow crunched underfoot. Thanks for posting, much love!

Sending my deepest condolences to Jack, Molly, Becky and Tom. Your dad was a lovely and kind man, memories of the Lloyd Family Christmas Parties on Spruce Street always make me smile. With sympathy, Jeannette (Eiman) Boulind
