John W. WallenVero Beach, FLJohn W. Wallen, of Vero Beach, FL, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on January 24th, 2017.He was born on November 30, 1924 in Bellport, NY, to the late John and Mary Wallen. John graduated from Bellport High School and entered the US
Army Air Corps where he served on Guam with the 551st Air Engineers Squadron until the end of
WWII. He then attended Indiana Central University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree, followed by a Master's Degree in Education from Hofstra University. John started his career as a teacher and dedicated many years to special education programs as Assistant Superintendent of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). While at BOCES he was instrumental in bringing the first Head Start pre-kindergarten program to Long Island. He retired as Comsewogue School District Superintendent, Port Jefferson Station, NY. After retirement he and his wife Sue (formerly Sue Armstrong), whom he met at Indiana Central University, relocated to Vero Beach, FL. John was an avid golfer, and enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially fishing.John is survived by his wife Sue, their three children Marllyn Justice (Dale) of Vero Beach, Claudia LoGalbo (Joseph) of Fort Salonga, NY, and John W. Wallen III (Antonina) of San Diego, CA, and six grandchildren. His funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am Monday, January 30, 2017 at Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church in Bellport, NY.
