Whitcomb, JohnJune 7, 1930 - October 13, 2016John Fredric WhitcombAfter a long and rewarding life, John "Jack " Whitcomb peacefully passed away on October 13th after his prolonged and courageous battle with cancer with his wife Susan by his side. John was born on June 7, 1930 in Washington, DC to Dorothy M. Whitcomb and John F. Whitcomb. Jack was athletic his entire life. He was an outstanding high school athlete at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC (class of '47).After graduating high school, he attended Randolph Macon College, Class of "52", in Ashland, Virginia. He continued to excel in basketball, where he was Captain of the team. Jack still holds two basketball scoring records at Randolph Macon College and was inducted into the RMC Hall of Fame in 2001. Upon leaving Randolph Macon College, he served in the US Army for two years. After his discharge, he began his coaching career at St. Anne's CYO in Washington, DC and soon thereafter he began coaching basketball and teaching math at Gonzaga College High School.In 1958, Jack was hired as the first Athletic Director at Bishop O'Connell High School where he continued to teach math and coach basketball and baseball. In 1960, he entered his financial career with Merrill Lynch and has served in the financial industry ever since. In the 1980's, Jack was manager of Wheat First Securities (Wells Fargo) twice earning manager of the year honors. In 1989, he attended Wharton School of Business and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado.He relocated to Sarasota, Florida in 1999, where he resided until his death.Jack was also an avid Bridge player. He not only was a Gold Life Master, but in 2008 he made the Barry Crane 500 list.He is survived by his wife, Susan Rupe Whitcomb, and his children, son Jon Whitcomb, Kevin Whitcomb (Trish), Michael Whitcomb Jamie) and Rob Whitcomb (Heather).He also leaves 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, a stepdaughter and a stepson and 5 step-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Linda Whitcomb.The Whitcomb family and John's wish, is that all contributions be made out to "The John Whitcomb Scholarship Fund," and be mailed to Gift Processing, Randolph Macon College, P.O. Box 5005, Ashland, Virginia 23005-5505.A Memorial Mass will be held at noon on October 29th, Saturday, at St. Ann's Church, 4001 Yuma St. NW, Washington, DC 20016.Immediately following Mass, there will be a Celebration of Life/Reception at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad.A local Mass and service will be held at a later date in Sarasota.
