Jose Manuel CovarrubiasOxnard, CAJose Manuel Covarrubias passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at the age of 94. He was born on Jan. 1, 1923 in La Mesa de San Nicolas, Jalisco, Mexico and was one of two children of Angel Covarrubias and Margarita Fletes Covarrubias. Upon arriving in the United States in the early 1940's, Jose worked in Malibu at flower fields overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On Feb. 25, 1952 he married Socorro Ponce and they settled in Oxnard where they raised their four children and were married for 64 years before Socorro's passing on Aug. 25, 2016. Jose worked as a milkman for Chase Brothers Dairy in Oxnard for 25 years. When Chase Brothers Dairy closed their Fifth Street operations, he joined Adohr Farms in Camarillo where he also worked as a milkman for 10 years until they closed their dairy. He then transitioned to working for Everest & Jennings in Camarillo where he helped to build wheelchairs for the company before retiring many years later.His greatest pride in life was for him and Socorro to provide a Catholic education for their children and being proud of their personal and professional accomplishments.In addition to his strong faith, Jose loved soccer and always rooted for his favorite Mexican soccer team, Las Chivas de Guadalajara. Jose helped establish the first organized men's adult soccer league in Oxnard in the 1960's and managed and coached the Nacional Soccer Club to many city and regional championships over 15 years. Sundays always started with the family attending Mass together followed by traveling for soccer matches to Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles counties or Oxnard home games at Rose Avenue School. Jose's family also participated in the soccer club activities by making Socorro's famous tortas to sell, ironing uniforms, or rooting for the team as cheerleaders. Jose organized many fundraising dances held at the Oxnard Elks Lodge and the Oxnard Monday Club to benefit the soccer club's activities. He also served as an usher over 20 years at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.Jose is survived by his children Mabi Covarrubias Plisky (Michael), Jose M. Covarrubias Jr., (Dawn), Nancy Covarrubias Gill (Rick), and Dr. Minerva Covarrubias. Jose had one grandson, Ricky Gill, who nicknamed him 'Papi.'He is also survived by his sister-in-law Glafira Garcia Covarrubias and nephew Angel Covarrubias; a sister Isabel Gomez and husband Jorge; a brother Juan Jose Arreola and wife Anna Maria; as well as a sister-in-law Guadalupe Ponce Arreola, three brothers-in-law and their wives: Ramon (Carmen), Celso (Lydia) and Jesus (Socorro) Ponce; and many nieces and nephews.Those preceding his death include Jose's parents, his spouse Socorro Ponce Covarrubias, his brother Merced Covarrubias, and his sister Paula Robles and husband Jorge Robles.The family extends a special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at Maywood Acres Healthcare; his and Socorro's longtime caregivers Blanca Cordova and Ana Aguilera; Sister Maritza from the Sisters Servants of Mary; and his physician Dr. Ted Hostetler and staff. Visitation for Jose is planned for Monday, May 8. from 5 till 9 p.m., with a vigil and recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m., in the Camino del Sol Funeral Home Chapel, 200 North "C" St., Oxnard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 9 at 10 a.m.. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 2511 South C Street, Oxnard, CA. Burial will follow in Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to St. Anthony's Church, 2511 South C Street, Oxnard, CA 93033.Arrangements have been entrusted to OTTO & SON'S, GUARDIAN MEMORIAL - FUNERAL DIRECTORS, OXNARD, (805) 483-1072.
