Montgomery, Joseph P.Joseph P. Montgomery, 74, of Stevens Point, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at his home under the care of Ministry Hospice. Joseph was born on November 14, 1942 in Ottumwa, Iowa to the late Enoch and Genevieve (Volk) Montgomery. He attended school in Amherst, WI and graduated from high school in 1961. Joseph married Theresa (Buza) Firkus on June 26, 1976 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanark, WI. They were married for 39 years before Theresa passed on October 27, 2015. Throughout his life, Joseph has lived in Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas and Arkansas. He worked in the fertilizer industry, owned a farm, and managed a construction team in Mexico building roads. In 2013, Joseph retired from Donaldson Co Inc after 21 years there.Together, Joseph and his late wife Theresa enjoyed gardening, traveling out west, and playing Pinochle or Cribbage. They were avid church-goers who loved polka dancing at church picnics and weddings. During family gatherings, Joseph would set up a croquet course on a perfectly manicured lawn. As the weather would get colder, he would play all-time quarterback for family football games.On any given afternoon you could find Joseph mowing the lawn or sitting at the dining room table playing cards after work. He would always greet you with a clever quip and if you would respond with a swift and witty comeback, it was sure to make him laugh. Joseph was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and also enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers with family. He also found peace pontooning on Lake Nokomis in Tomahawk, WI.He is survived by his children Michelle (Richard) Grzesciakowski of Waupaca, WI and Donald Montgomery of Turlock, CA whom he shared with a former wife; step-children Shirley (Richard Rader) Hogrefe of Plainfield, WI; Roger (Diane) Firkus of Iola, WI; Allen (Donna) Firkus of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Janeen (Keith Sullivan) Groshek of Burnsville, MN; Jack (Linda) Firkus of Stevens Point, WI; Nichole (Matthew) Peplinski of Tomahawk, WI; 11 step-grandchildren, 9 step-great grandchildren and 1 step-great-great grandchild; siblings Samuel (Patricia) Montgomery of Lisbon, IA; Michael (Cindy) Montgomery of Mt. Vernon, WI; Regina Roberts of Lisbon, IA.He was preceded in death by his late wife Theresa, his parents, his son James Montgomery, step-granddaughter Traci Anne Firkus, and step-grandson Benjamin Duane Betro. Joseph's family would like to give a special thank you to Marshfield Clinic Cancer Center and Ministry Hospice for the exceptional and compassionate care he received.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday September 23, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Polonia. Rev. Greg Michaud officiating. Burial St. James Parish Cemetery Amherst. Visitation on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
