Mr. Joseph Clinton Sawyer of West Jefferson died on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center. He was 82.

Mr. Sawyer was born on March 5, 1932 in Crumpler to George and Myra Wiles Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beatrice Sawyer; son, Michael Sawyer; stepson, Eddie Miller; two sisters, Ruby Arnold and Thelma Caudill; and brother, Ray Sawyer.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by daughters, Kay (Glenn) Dunwoody of Virginia and Tracy (Mark) Miller of West Jefferson; two stepdaughters, Janet (Will) Asbury and Shirley (Gary) Asbury, both of Florida; stepson, Arnold Miller of Pennsylvania; two brothers, John Sawyer of West Jefferson and Dean Sawyer of Florida; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Reeves Jones and Preacher Michael Miller. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
