Joseph W. Campbell, age 91, of Port Orange, FL, and formerly of Kingsport, entered into the grace of Heaven with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Joseph was born on May 17, 1925 in Bristol, TN to the late James Samuel Campbell and the late Nell Louise Milhorn Campbell. In 1952 Joseph married his best friend and love of his life, Hazel Rice, and after 43 years of a lifetime together, she preceded him in death in 1995. J.W. moved to Port Orange, FL in 2009. J.W. bravely served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II and he always maintained a keen interest in his WW II service throughout his life. He was actively involved in attending and hosting the 314th Infantry and the 79th Recon trips and reunions. In 2014, Joseph received the French Legion of Honor Medal; which was presented to him personally by the French Consulate in a public ceremony. J.W. was a kind, compassionate and generous man. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and he was a strong, faithful church member his entire life. J.W. had a strong faith foundation in God and he served God in every aspect of his life. J.W. was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Hazel Rice Campbell; two brothers, Lawrence Campbell and Bob Campbell; and his constant companion of 16 years, his Shih-tzu dog "Deogee", who preceded him in death in May of 2016. Left to cherish his memories are his son, Randy Campbell and wife Linda; brother, Charles Campbell and wife Nell; several nieces and nephews; and dear family friends, Dennis and Sallie Page. The family would like to give a special "Thank You" to J.W.'s hospice nurse, Tori Cooks, for her care and compassion that she has unselfishly given of herself to take care of J.W. For those who wish to come by and pay their final respects, J.W. will be lying in repose at East Lawn Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm; however, the family will not be present during this time. There will be a private family graveside service for J.W. which will be officiated by Pastor Ron Lowe and retired USAF Chaplain, Colonel Bob Rothman. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Kingsport Community Church, located at 2316 Memorial Blvd, Kingsport, TN 37664 (423) 246-2212; and/or White Chapel Church of God, located at 730 S Ridgewood Ave, South Daytona, FL 32119, (386) 767-5470; and/or a non-profit organization of your choice.
