Joyce Olga (Wood) Birrell passed away on January 30, 2017 at age 88. She was born on December 28, 1928 in Hull, England, the fifth of six children to Ethel and Arnold Wood. Her family moved to Ilkley, Yorkshire, England when she was 11, to escape the bombings in Hull during World War II. She lived in Ilkley until she married Gordon Birrell in May 1955, and a year later they moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In late 1960 she and Gordon moved to Connecticut, where they lived until their retirement. In Newtown Connecticut, Joyce was very active in PTA, Newtown Garden Club, and with the Newtown Board of Realtors. In 1985 Joyce and Gordon retired and moved to Palm Coast, Florida, and they remained in the same house for 30 years. Joyce was active with Palm Coast Garden Club, The Arrangers Guild, The British Club and The New England Club. She was an avid gardener, Mah-jong player, and an organizer. She and Gordon were committed to their British heritage and loved having tea and biscuits each afternoon around 4 o'clock. Gordon passed away in January 2016, and since that time Joyce resided at Brookdale Senior Living in Palm Coast. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the caring staff at Brookdale and to the Vitas hospice staff who cared so wonderfully for Joyce over the past two years. Joyce is survived by a daughter Kim Birrell (Kevin Horn) of Helena, Montana, and beloved sister Audrey, brother Phillip and many nieces and nephews, all who reside in the UK. Clymer Funeral Home handled the arrangements. There was no memorial service as per Joyce's wishes, however, she specified that donations can be made to Salvation Army of Bunnell, Florida.
