Joyce Jones Obituary
Nov 24, 1924 - Aug 28, 2017
This obituary is administered by:
Jones, JoyceJoyce Bessie Allen Jones was born on November 23, 1924 in DeRuyter, NY, to Howard David Allen and Mildred Anita Morgan. Joyce passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017 surrounded by all her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her only sister, Dorothy Allen Warner passed away on the same day, within hours of Joyce.Joyce graduated from DeRuyter High School in 1942 and headed off to RIT that fall. In June 1943 Joyce married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Jones. For over 73 years Joyce and Ken were great partners, orchestrating the day to day operations of raising nine children; Joyce helping the kids get ready for school while Ken prepared breakfast and lunches before everyone headed off to school. A mother of nine and skilled homemaker, Joyce made every penny double in value. She was an amazing seamstress, knitter, and as all her children will attest, a skilled employment specialist. Joyce knitted over 225 baby sweaters with all sales donated to the American Cancer Society. As a member of the Whitney Point United Methodist Church Sew and Sews, Joyce contributed many hours and her sewing talents to help 'dress little girls around the world'.While Joyce never considered herself a chef or baker, she did work up some wonderful meals. Her grandchildren often opted for a loaf of her homemade oatmeal bread over a twenty-dollar bill as their birthday gift. Some even labeled it 'do not touch, this is mine'. It made the best toast.Joyce was a home economist and one of the first to coin the word 'recycle'. From Her back room neatly organized with reusable containers and paper, her sewing box full of buttons from worn out clothing, ribbon and holiday paper that would be neatly pressed and ready for the next occasion. One of the best gifts Joyce gave her children was the way she quietly danced the 'tango' of life with Ken. They danced it in a way that it looked like a beautiful waltz. A wonderful gift to us all.Ken, Joyce's beloved husband, best friend and high school sweet-heart preceded her in death in 2016. Joyce is survived by her nine children, Mary (Charles) Green of Whitney Point, Janet Jones Frand of Whitney Point, Janine (William) Nechwedowich of Whitney Point, Mark (Pamela) of Macungie PA, Eugene (Kathryn) of Whitney Point, Morgan (Jennifer) of Homer NY, Jeffrey (Dianne) of Greene NY, Patricia (Victor) Montanez of Dryden, NY and Ronald (Enid) of Whitney Point. She had 25 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Calling hours to be held at the United Methodist Church located at 7311 Collins Street, Whitney Point NY on Sunday 9/3 from 1:00 to 2:30pm with memorial service to follow. Arrangements by Sunset Memorial Services. Memorial donations can be made to the Whitney Point United Methodist Church at PO Box 739, Whitney Point, NY 13862, earmarked for the Sew and Sews.
