A life well lived

Karen Burgess, a beloved resident of Sterling, Kansas, passed away on April 20, 2023 at the age of 77. She was born on July 4, 1945 in Wichita, Kansas to her parents, John and Mary Burgess.

Karen was an exceptional individual, known for her intelligence, warmth, and generosity. She graduated with honors from Sterling High School in 1963 and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Education from Emporia State University. Karen was always passionate about teaching and after college, she started her career as a fourth-grade teacher in Sterling. Over the years, she became a well-loved and respected member of the faculty, particularly admired for her ability to connect with her students and make learning fun.

Karen was actively involved in the Sterling community, where she dedicated her time and resources to a variety of local organizations. Karen was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, where she volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and served on various committees. She was also a proud supporter of the Sterling Public Library and the Sterling Arts Council, and regularly attended community events and performances.

Outside of work and community service, Karen had a wide range of interests and hobbies. She was an avid reader, particularly of history and biographies, and was always up for a stimulating conversation. Karen also enjoyed traveling, especially to places with rich cultural heritage. She had a passion for gardening, and her backyard was a stunning display of colorful flowers and greenery.

Karen was known for her kindness and generosity, always going out of her way to help her friends and neighbors. She was quick to offer a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a home-cooked meal. Her sense of humor and positive attitude were infectious, and she was a beloved friend and confidant to many.

Karen's passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her sister, Susan Burgess, and her brother, Robert Burgess, as well as several nieces and nephews. Karen will always be remembered as a loving daughter, sibling, teacher, and friend, whose impact on Sterling and its residents will endure for generations to come.
