Karl Walter OhnmachtAGE: 89 • Jupiter, FLKarl Walter Ohnmacht (known as Walter), 89, died after a short illness at his home in Jupiter, FL on June 25, 2017. Walter Ohnmacht was born on March 20, 1928 in Somerville, NJ to parents William and Bertha Ohnmacht. As a youth he worked with his family at the Central Bakery in Somerville. He graduated from Somerville High School in 1946, and enlisted in the US Navy, where he served on the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. After leaving the Navy, he married Gertrude Matis on October 4, 1953 at St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church in Bound Brook, NJ. They and their family lived in Somerville for many years, and then moved to Bridgewater in 1976. Walter spent his entire career working for the US Postal Service in Somerville, NJ retiring in 1987. He also held a part-time job with American Courier Corporation. After retiring to Lavallette, Walter and Gertrude divided their time between their dual homes in Lavallette, NJ and Jupiter, FL, beginning in 1993. He was a longtime congregant at the First Reformed Dutch Church in Somerville and later the United Reformed Church of Somerville where he served as a member of the Consistory and taught Sunday school. In Florida he attended Mass with his wife Gertrude at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jupiter. Walter's passion was athletics. Throughout his adult life he served as a sports official, officiating at football, lacrosse and soccer games throughout central New Jersey for Pop Warner football teams as well as freshman, junior and senior varsity games. He continued his involvement as a football official until age 78. He was a longtime mentor to many officials, and enjoyed deep and lasting friendships with his fellow "referees."He is survived by his three children: Susan of McLean, VA, Mark of Washington, DC, and Kurt of Jupiter, FL; two grandchildren Tyler and Briana of Land O' Lakes, FL; niece, Lynda Van Gorder and nephew, Bill Ohnmacht of Somerville, NJ, and niece, Sandy Ihnen of Indiatlantic, FL; three great nieces, Jennifer Van Gorder of Reston, VA, Jessica (Ohnmacht) Kari and her husband, Sina of Rockaway, NJ, and Katerina Ohnmacht of Somerville, NJ; great nephew, Brandon Ihnen of Indiatlantic, FL; sister-in-law, Joan Mathis of Somerville, NJ; cousin, Michael Kicia of Somerville, NJ; and many friends in Somerville, Lavallette and Jupiter. A Memorial Service is scheduled for July 28 @ 10:30 am at the United Reformed Church of Somerville, NJ. A Repast will follow at the Elks Lodge on Union Avenue in Bridgewater, NJ.
