KATHLEEN (KAY) SHRYOCK FISHER Kathleen (Kay) Shryock Fisher, 96, beloved wife and mother, died peacefully surrounded by her family on August 29, 2016. Kathleen was born on May 4, 1920, in her family's farm home in Stephens, Mo. She grew up with her parents, Ward and Ivie Smith Shryock, and older sister, Margaret and younger brother, J.W. (Jay). Kathleen attended grades 1-8 in the one-room Truitt School. She graduated with honors from Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo., and became the first in her family to graduate, again with honors, with a degree in Home Economics from the University of Missouri in 1942. Kay became a high school
teacher in Bowling Green, Mo., but soon left that career to pursue her dream of becoming a wife and homemaker. She joined her fiance, Gilbert Wray Fisher, in Boise, Idaho, where he was in B-17 pilot training with the Army Air Corps. They married there on Nov. 10, 1942, and enjoyed a year together before Gil departed for England to join the Eighth Air Force. Upon Gil's return in the fall of 1944, they lived in Liberal, Kan. In 1945, when Gil joined Trans World Airlines, they eventually settled in Kansas City. In 1949 they realized their dream of designing and building their family home in Leawood, Kan. They treasured spending 60-plus years there, raising their four children and enjoying their retirement years until Gil's death in 2011. Mom is survived by her four children, Margaret Lee and husband Michael Kierst of Taos, NM, their daughter Alison Kathleen and husband Robert Grainger; Kelly and his wife Julie of Port Angeles, Wash., their daughter Jean and husband Tobin Eckholt, and daughter Kathleen and husband Branden Sirguy, and their children Emily, William and Elise; Virginia (Ginny) and partner Stanley Abromaitis of Kansas City; Laura Ann and husband Roger Kuhn of Ventura, Calif. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family. While life without our Mom is difficult to imagine, we are comforted by knowing that she and Dad are once again united. We will miss her so. The family wishes to thank the devoted staff of Claridge Court for the wonderful care and concern they showed our Mom. We also wish to thank Fr. Keith Lunsford and Pat Centner for the spiritual support they so generously gave to both our parents and to us. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated with the immediate family Thursday, Sept. 1, at St. Ann Catholic Church. The family requests any donations in Mom's memory be sent to St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208. Muehlebach Funeral Care. Established and Family Owned Since 1954.
