Katie Almanzar, 92, a longtime resident of both Las Vegas and Mora, returned to Our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 29, 2016.She was born on Oct. 5, 1923, in Las Vegas to Luis Tapia and Mary McElroy Tapia.She married the love of her life, Mike Almanzar, on Sept. 19, 1942, at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and they were married for 50 years.Katie attended Normal High School. She worked at the Jay Val Parachute Factory and the Jean Factory during World War II. In 1953, she and Mike established Mike's Upholstery, later known as Almanzar's Carpet and Upholstery. In 1965, her love for children led her to opening Katie's Lullaby Nursery. Over the years, it brought her great joy to see her former nursery children grown with families of their own. In 1977, Katie and Mike relocated to Cleveland, where they built Motel Almanzar and Café. Katie met and became close friends with all the locals. She looked forward to greeting all of her customers, especially her special friends, who she referred to as the "coffee drinkers."She sold Motel Almanzar to return home to her family in Las Vegas in November of 2003. Her love for children eventually led her to becoming a foster grandparent for the Las Vegas City Schools. She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends and made sure her guests never left her home hungry.She loved sewing, her plants and spending time with her family. Her greatest pride was her children and grandchildren.Katie was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Daughters for 53 years and a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was also an active member of the Senior Circle Sewing Club.She was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Mary Tapia; her beloved husband, Mike Almanzar; brothers, Luis Tapia Jr., William Tapia and Eddie Tapia; sisters, Teresa Vigil and Velma Padilla; and great-grandchildren, Angel Santillanes and Cody Quintana.She is survived by her daughters and sons, Harriet A. Duran and husband, Tommy A., of Rio Rancho, Mike Almanzar Jr. and wife, JoAnn, of Las Vegas, Joe D. Almanzar and wife, Lorraine, of Santa Fe, Bernadette Almanzar, Lorelei Almanzar, Chris Almanzar and wife, Cheryl, all of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Renee Duran, Thomas Duran, Louis Duran (Michelle), Allison Santillanes (Clifford), Austin Almanzar (Juanita), Valerie Almanzar (Aaron), Joseph Almanzar (Maha), Philip Winston (Joanna), Paul Winston, Luke Winston (Raven), Mark Winston (Cynthia), Craig Winston (Sabrina), Natalie Marrujo (Nicholas), Michael Quintana (Alizza) and Sonia Castillo; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, John Padilla of Santa Fe; numerous nieces, nephews, god children and other relatives and many friends.Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will take place at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe with the following serving as casket bearers: Thomas Duran, Joseph Almanzar, Austin Almanzar, Michael Quintana, Philip Winston and Luke Winston. Serving as honorary bearers will be all her remaining grandchildren.In closing, we want to give a special thanks to her caregivers Diane Ortiz, Tomasita Baca and Desiree Ortiz. Their never ending love and care is greatly appreciated.
