Kaye Marie (Cashman) Sandul, a long-time resident of Lewes, DE died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 12, 2017 in Columbia, MD. Kaye was born on April 22, 1935 in Hallock, MN and lived there until 1953. In 1952, Clyde NIck Sandul and Kaye began dating and were married on Jan 10, 1953 in Raton, NM. While Clyde continued his U.S. Army career, the family traveled throughout the U.S. Kaye spent her time raising their two children. She also loved to bowl, was a Den Mother to her son's cub scout troop, and volunteered as a Candy Striper in the local hospital. After Clyde retired in 1969 in Laurel, MD, Kaye started working at an Insurance Company in Laurel. After a year, Kaye became an Office Manager for Sylvan Pools, where she stayed for 10 years. Kaye served as the Clerk to the Laurel City Council, Laurel, Maryland from January 1981 until her retirement in December 1996. She was the first woman to hold this position in the city's history. During her tenure, she was among the first Maryland Municipal Clerks to achieve the International Institutes of Municipal Clerks Association designation of "Certified Municipal Clerk". She was also an active member in the Maryland Municipal Clerks Association. While serving as Clerk to the Laurel City Council, Kaye served eight City Councils and four Mayors. She administered eight City Elections, and attended approximately 700 meetings. She was a member of the City's Senior Management Team. Kaye received numerous commendations and letters of appreciation from Mayors, Councilmembers, and Citizens. She was highly regarded amongst her co-workers, the people she served, and the Citizens of Laurel. After retirement Kaye and Clyde built their "dream" home in Lewes where they spent the remainder of their lives together. Kaye always said she had met the love of her life, marrying Clyde. After Clyde's death in 2005, Kaye spent her time with family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, walking, reading, traveling, eating Maryland crabs, and drinking a cold beer. Surviving loved ones include her son Michael (Tina) and their daughters Christina Grierson (John) and Alyson; her daughter Pamella Lee (Ron) and their children Amy, Ryan (Danielle), Gregory, and Samantha. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters Ruth Gatheridge, Lois Were, and brother James. Kaye Sandul was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Nick, father, Edward, mother Emmy (Johnson), brother Robert, and sisters Joyce Nelson and Peggy Decoteau. Mayor/Laurel Craig A. Moe who worked with Kaye as a City Councilmember, has ordered the City flag to be flown at half staff in her honor until her funeral services have been completed. Funeral services for Kaye will be held at Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills, MD on March 17,2017 from 11-12 for the visitation followed with a service at noon. Directly after the service, Kaye will be laid to rest next to her husband at Maryland Veteran's Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
