Dr. Kenneth Sinclair Houghton died in his home in the World Golf Village in St. Augustine on Dec. 13, 2016, at the age of 76.Ken is survived by his wife, Helen; his four children: Kendall Lee and her husband, Thomas F. Walsh III, Dr. Kenneth Sinclair, Jr., and his wife, Tori West, Kevin Fitzgerald and his wife, Maggie Catchick, and Kerry James and his wife, Rebecca Houghton; his five grandchildren: Grace Houghton, Sophia Houghton, Greer Houghton, Connor Houghton and Jeremy Walsh; and his four step-grandchildren: Julia and Derek Sturvist and Tylene and Marin Ama.Ken was born on Aug. 31, 1940, in Hackensack, New Jersey, to Harry Houghton and Viola Boltman Houghton. He graduated from St. Peter's College in 1962 with a bachelor's in chemistry, and he earned a master's and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Seton Hall University in 1972. He married Helen Scapp, whom he met while they were graduate students at the University of Maryland, in 1963. Ken then served four years in the U.S. Army, as a first lieutenant, including three years in Germany. Ken spent 25 years working with Philip Morris in various positions in the United States and Switzerland, culminating in his role as senior vice president of Research and Development. Ken was an accomplished golfer, and he and Helen traveled to all seven continents. Ken derived great pleasure from the company of his grown children, and he enjoyed close relationships with each of his grandchildren.A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 17, at St. John's Family Funeral Home, 385 State Road 207, St. Augustine.
