FAIRFAX, Va. — Retired Navy Capt. Larry Duane Kunkel passed away at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on April 13, 2015. He was born on April 18, 1935, to Edith and William Kunkel in Steuben County, Indiana, and graduated from Angola High School in 1953. He married Regina Ogle of Goshen, Indiana, on December 28, 1957. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Regina; their three sons, Jeffrey, Stephen, and Thomas; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Capt. Kunkel graduated from Purdue University in 1957 with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering and was commissioned as a naval officer through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. After qualifying as a pilot, he flew with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron ONE (VR-1) aboard Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland; Patrol Squadron ELEVEN (VP-11) aboard Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine; and Patrol Squadron EIGHTEEN (VP-18) aboard Naval Air Station Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. He commanded Fleet Composite Squadron FIVE (VC-5) aboard Naval Air Station Naha, Okinawa, was the communications officer aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), and was the Director of the Naval Weapons Engineering Support Activity in Washington, D.C. He completed the resident program at the U.S. Naval War College in Providence, Rhode Island, with distinction and earned a M.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He served as a Director at the Naval Air Systems Command and the President of the Physical Review Council, Naval Council of Personnel Boards. After serving 31 years in the Navy he retired and continued in public service with the Fairfax County Office of Elections until his recent death. His remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date during a private family ceremony.
