Laura (Laurie) L. Blackmon passed away on October 4, 2017 in Alamogordo, New Mexico.Laurie was born on July 5, 1949 in Mason City, Iowa. She grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1967. She then attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Tom Blackmon in 1974 in Tucson, Arizona. Laurie was preceded in death by daughter, April Blackmon; parents, Dr. Edward L. Chappell and Lucille Davis; grandparents, Dr. Frederick and Laura Sneed and Dr. Edward E. and Idona Chappell. Surviving Laurie are husband, Tom of the family home; son, Christopher (Tracy) Blackmon of Goldsboro, NC: grandchildren, Autumn Blackmon, 24, of New York City, NY and Cody Blackmon, 26, of Goldsboro, NC; brother and sister in law, Jeff and Judy Blackmon of Eaton, OH; cousins, a niece and nephew, and many friends. Laurie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she had served as president of the LWML, head of the Evangelism Committee, and a Sunday school teacher. At the time of her death, she was on the Altar Guild, an Usher, a member of LWML, and head of the Funeral Committee. Currently, she was on the Executive Board of Love Inc of Otero County as secretary, on the Senior Center Advisory Council, and volunteered at the Alamogordo Pregnancy Help Center. Laurie was known to always have a smile on her face and a laugh in her heart. The family will greet friends from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on October 8, 2017 at Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.The funeral service for Laura Blackmon will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, October 9, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1505 College Ave., with Reverend Bill Heithold officiating.Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity LWML or the .The Blackmon family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.To sign the online register book, please visit
