Heybl, FSPA, Sister LauriceSister Laurice Heybl, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 87, died on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse. She was in the sixty-first year of her religious profession.Sister Laurice Heybl (Dolores Catherine) was born on March 21, 1930 to Jacob and Gertrude (Denfeld) Heybl in Wausau, Wis. She and her three sisters and one brother grew up during the depression, and later experienced the effects of WWII. Her father worked as a factory worker. Her mother worked part time at the local laundry. In spite of economic hardships, she and her siblings were able to attend St. Mary's School in Wausau. Dolores felt a great support from the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration who taught at the school and spent much time helping them in school. After high school she worked for a few years at Wausau Insurance Company. There she experienced affirmation for her ingenuity and hard work. She was active in sports of all types: tennis, roller-skating, skiing, bowling and swimming, and in various activities at her local parish. Throughout her post-school years she felt a call to religious life. In September 1953, Dolores entered St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, Wisconsin. She was accepted into the novitiate on August 12, 1954 and given the name Sister Laurice. She professed her first vows on August 12, 1956 and her perpetual commitment as a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration on August 10, 1962.Sister Laurice started her ministry teaching in elementary and middle schools in Carroll, Iowa (Holy Spirit and Sts. Peter and Paul), Wisconsin (Marathon, La Crosse [St. James], Superior, Loyal, Eau Claire [Immaculate Conception]) and Blackfoot, Idaho. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a minor in art from Viterbo College (University) and a Master's degree in art from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. After earning a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Seattle University, she moved into youth ministry for the Duluth Diocese from 1975 to 1986. She then ministered in Palo Alto, California from 1989 to 1996 as a pastoral planning coordinator at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. She returned to La Crosse where she served as vocation director for the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration until 2003. After that, Sister Laurice provided creativity workshops for FSPA and for the Franciscan Spirituality Center until this past year. Due to failing health in 2017, she moved to Villa St. Joseph just outside La Crosse.Sister Laurice is remembered as always being full of life, love and creativity. Her passion for working with the young kept her young at heart. Her artistic creativity touched many throughout her formal and informal ministry. One could always count on Sister Laurice to be present to celebrate any occasion big or small. She loved making pottery, drinking a good glass of wine and connecting with her loved ones, especially her family. Her fierce love of life showed in everything that she did. Sister Laurice is survived by her religious community and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jacob Jr. (Jack) and her sisters, Betty Howe, Cecilia Pazdernik, and Audrey Reetz. The wake service for Sister Laurice was held on Nov. 9, with the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, Nov. 10 in the chapel.
