Lawrence "Larry" William Abbott passed away early Saturday morning at his home in Walkersville. Larry was born on May 14, 1949 to the late Willis Robert and Marybelle Abbott in Bethesda, Maryland. Larry is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan, his son Heath and wife Shaune of Smithsburg, and daughters Heather and husband David of Leesburg,Virginia, Sarah of Walkersville, and Michelle and husband Jay, also of Walkersville. Larry also leaves behind eight precious grandchildren; Stephen, Liam, and Eva Abbott, Rece and Caris German, Ella and Landon Vyborny, and Cole Hessler. They were the joy of his life.Larry is survived by his sister Rosemary Abbott of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his two brothers, Willis "Bub" Abbott of Walkersville and Kenneth "Kenny" Abbott of Frederick. Larry spent his childhood as well as his adult life in Frederick County. He graduated from the newly built Thomas Johnson High School in 1967, distinguishing him as being the first graduate of TJ High. Following high school, Larry went to work for the United States Postal Service and continued working at the post office until his retirement in 2004, making many lifelong friends.Larry most enjoyed being with his grandchildren, and taking them to fun places or going to their school and sporting events. Tropical fish were his favorite hobby and visitors always enjoyed his beautiful tanks. Larry was an animal lover, story-teller, trivia buff, and enjoyed fishing. He was a loyal Redskins fan.Over the years, Larry fought through a number of medical challenges, including a heart transplant 6 1/2 years ago. The Abbott family would like to express their gratitude to a number of people who helped Larry as he struggled through his health issues. Most importantly, they would like to thank the family of Larry's heart donor who selflessly gave him 6 1/2 additional years with his family. The family would also like to thank Dr. Ilan Wittstein, and the heart transplant team at Johns Hopkins Hospital for many years of dedicated service to his care. Dr. Sadaf Taimur and Dr. Adriana Hohl also provided years of supportive and professional care.The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 8 from the funeral home with Rev. Albert K. Lane III officiating.
