In loving memory of Lazaro 'Larry' Garcia who went to be with the Lord on Oct. 9, 2014 at 102 years of age. Lazaro, a lifelong resident of Mora passed away peacefully in his home.Lazaro was preceded in death by his parents, Maximiliano and Leonarda Garcia; wife, Dolores ""Lola"" Garcia, his daughter, Annie Mondragon and a grandson, Eugene Mondragon.Lazaro is survived by four children, Lala Martinez and husband, E.J. of Santa Fe and their three children, David, Vincent, Anna; Grace Gonzales and husband, Richard of Santa Fe and their three children, Richard, Steven, Dolores; Therese Maes and husband, Arthur of Santa Fe and their two children, Brenda, Arthur Jr.; Larry Garcia and wife, Irene of Mora and their two children, Phillip, Felisha; and Rudy Mondragon, husband of the late Annie Mondragon, and their three children, James, Joann, Eugene. He was a grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.Lazaro was born on April 17, 1912 in Ledoux. Lazaro was one of the most widely known and respected elders in Mora County and surrounding areas. Lazaro served the community and the state of New Mexico in many capacities. He served as the Democratic Chairman for Mora County for 12 years. The highlight of Lazaro's political career was being nominated and serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles in July of 1960. This was the convention that nominated John F. Kennedy. Lazaro served 12 years on the Mora San Miguel Electric Board. He also served on the Mora School Board for 21 years, many of those as chairman of the board.After working for the state of New Mexico for 30 years, Lazaro retired in 1979 at the age of 67. In 1991, Lazaro was elected into the New Mexico Democratic Hall of Fame. In his honor, in 1999, the middle school in Mora was named after him, ""Lazaro (Larry) Garcia Middle School.""Lazaro was dedicated to his family and friends. He was a man of great pride and dignity and believed in working hard to help his community. He has touched the lives of so many around New Mexico and will be missed by all who knew him.Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today (Monday) at Nelson Funeral Home. Rosary services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today (Monday) at St. Gertrudes Church in Mora. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Paul Grala, S.O.L.T., at 10 a.m. Tuesday also at St. Gertrudes Church, with a burial to follow at the Mora Cemetery.Serving as pallbearers will be: Arthur Maes Jr., David Martinez, Phillip Garcia, Steven Gonzales, James Mondragon and George Trujillo. Honorary pallbearers are: Tony Esquibel, John Espinoza, Moise Medina, Herman Lujan, Dwayne Martinez, C.B.
