AUBURN — Leland R. Fee, 94, of Auburn passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at DeKalb Health. He was born on September 20, 1920, on a farm one mile south of Hamilton, Indiana. His parents were Charlie and Agnes Fee. Leland graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1937 of Hamilton High School. As a high school sophomore, he won a gold medal for first place in the State Alegbra Contest at
Indiana University. He graduated from Ball State Teachers' College in 1941 with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and science. Leland then earned a Master's degree from Indiana University in 1949. His first year of teaching was at Mt. Summit High School in Henry County, Indiana for the 1941-42 school year. From 1942-44, Leland Taught as a civilian instructor at the
Army Air Forces Technical School in Tomah, Wisconsin. He then served in the U.S. Army as an enlisted man for two years. After discharge from the army, he returned to Scott Field for a short time as a civilian instructor. For the next five years, Leland taught mathematics and science at Ashley High School. He then became principal of Salem Center High School for 13 years from 1952-65. Leland then returned to Ashley High as principal from 1965 until his retirement in 1985. Leland married Virginia McDonald on July 10, 1948, in Covington, Indiana. Virginia graduated from
Purdue University in 1947. Virginia died on September 12, 2007, after 59 years of marriage. Leland is survived by three daughters and two sons: Christine M. (Albert) Cavazos of Alpine, TX, Brian E. (Lanette) Fee of Chapel Hill, NC, Lisa K. Baum of Stuart, FL, David L. (Marielie) Fee of Flowery Branch, GA, and Janet E. (Michael) Fisher of Valrico, FL. All five children are college graduates. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: John, Melissa and Amelia Fee; Bradley and Tyler Baum; Ryan and Zachary Fisher; Aneska and Dieter Fee; and three step-grandsons - Albert, Jamie and Carlos Cavazos. He is also survived by one sister, Marlene (Loren) Jinnings of Pleasant Lake, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ruby I. (Lowell) Stomm, and two brothers, Ronald L. Fee and Kenneth D. Fee. Leland will be remembered as a loving husband and father as well as an excellent teacher of mathematics, especially of algebra. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2014 at the Auburn Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lyle Ewing officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Auburn.
