Leo WeitzmanLeo Weitzman, of West Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on Thursday, December 8 with Judy, the love of his life by his side. He leaves behind his beloved wife of forty-six years, Judy; four children Amelia Schmidt (Mark), Josh (Leah), Polly Beeson (Oliver), and Dena (Michael Henderson), and seven grand-children.Leo was born on December 15, 1943 in Siberia where his parents found temporary refuge to avoid Hitler's occupation of Poland during World War II. After surviving the war, Leo and his parents spent several years in Displaced Persons camps in Germany, before immigrating to the United States of America where they built a new home for themselves in New York City. He graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School, Cooper Union, and received his Masters and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. Throughout Leo's career as a chemical engineer, he volunteered his time on panels assigned to the safe disposal of chemical weaponry and volunteered for a number of local non-profit agencies. He finished his career as the Environmental Permitting Manager at the Bechtel Parsons Bluegrass Facility in Richmond, Kentucky in 2010.After surviving the Holocaust, Leo believed that every day following was his gift of life. His family is extraordinarily grateful for those days as well and the lessons he shared. Leo's family wishes to extend deep gratitude to all of the friends and family members for their out pouring of love and support during the last few weeks, especially the members of Congregation Beth Shalom in Indianapolis.Burial will be Sunday, December 11 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a local memorial to follow in early 2017. In lieu of flowers, Leo's request was that donations be made in his honor to the Leo and Judy Weitzman Building Fund for Hillel, Purdue Hillel Foundation, 912 West State St., West Lafayette, IN 47906.
