Mr. Leon Winton King was born on December 25, 1927. Leon passed away on March 15, 2016 at the age of 88 in Lake City, Florida. He was the son of late David Drew King and Lizzie Thomas King of the Deep Creek community of Columbia County, Florida. Besides his parents, he had two brothers, Lonnie and Elwood and one sister, Lossie Mae Milton, all preceding him in death. Leon served in combat during the Korean War in 1952-53. He started working at the V.A. Medical Center in Lake City after his military discharge. At that time, he returned to school and earned his GED. While at the V.A., he received many awards recognizing his outstanding service, performance and innovation. It was at the V.A. Hospital that he met the nurse, Eleanor Diller, who became his wife. He retired from the V.A. in 1983 with 30 years of service to our veterans. He is survived by Eleanor, his wife of fifty years: two sons, Mark King (Heather) and David King (Angela): Five grandchildren, Joe, Sammy, Lilly, Dave and Maria King: two nephews, A.C. Milton (son of his sister, Lossie) and Russell Diller (son of Eleanors brother, Ellis Diller). He is also survived by many grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins who were very special to him. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. King will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, March 19, in the Deep Creek Advent Christian Church with Pastor Marty Basinger of the Calvary Baptist Church, Alachua, Fla. where Leon was a member, officiating. Assisting will be Mark King (son), former pastor of Seminary Avenue Community Church in Chicago, Illinois, Rev. Jack Mount (personal friend) and Rev. Howard Thomas, Pastor of the Deep Creek Advent Christian Church. Interment will be in Scott Cemetery, Columbia County, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 1 to 2 P.M. Saturday (One hour before services) at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Source of Light Ministries, 1101 Mission Road, Madison, Georgia 30650.
