This obituary is administered by:
LeRoy VoigtsWaverlyLeRoy R. Voigts, 89, of Waverly, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2017 at Bartel's Lutheran Retirement Community. He was born on the family farm in rural Greene on October 2, 1927 to Dick and Mary Voigts. After attending country school, he graduated from Allison High School in 1944 and then from Wartburg College (in Waverly) in 1948. While at Wartburg, he met Darlene Muehling, whom he married in 1950 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the congregation of which he was a member at the time of his death. After graduation, "Red" went on to teach history and coach boys' athletics in both Denver (IA) and Sumner. Following a brief stint in the Navy, he attended Drake Law School, from which he graduated in 1955. He then joined the Nyemaster Goode law firm, where he cherished his time as a partner and trial attorney until his retirement in 2002. Roy and Darlene made their home in Des Moines for fifty years before moving back to Waverly in 2003. During their 65 years of marriage they became the loving parents of Doug, Jane, Nancy and son-in-law Henry, as well as the joyful grandparents of Lucy and Gaby.During his career, LeRoy served time as the President of the Polk County Bar Association, the Iowa Defense Counsel and the Drake Law School Board of Governors. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Iowa Bar Association, the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association and the International Association of Defense Counsel. In addition, Roy was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Board of Regents of Wartburg College. In response to his son's deafness, he served as President of the Des Moines Hearing and Speech Center and as a member of the Board of Governors for both Lutheran Social Services of Iowa and the Iowa Children and Family Services Agency. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he was a faithful and active member of his beloved Windsor Heights Lutheran Church for all the years he lived in Des Moines. LeRoy loved life. He loved his background of growing up on the farm. He loved being a lawyer and his colleagues at the firm and beyond. He loved to read. He loved history, especially anything having to do with Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War and England. He loved playing Bridge. He loved to tend his yard and grow tomatoes. He loved to grill. He loved Darlene's homemade pies. He loved road trips with family and friends. He loved a leisurely meal at a good restaurant, especially if it included fresh oysters-on-the-half-shell and a Beefeaters on the rocks. He loved to laugh and tell stories. He loved to write the hilarious annual family Christmas letter almost as much as everyone loved to receive and read it. He loved his beloved Chicago Cubs ever since he was a young boy, first listening to them on the radio while taking a break from chores, until now, getting to watch them win the World Series from his room in the nursing home. He loved his faith and his church. He loved his multitude of friends. But most of all, he loved his wife, his kids, his nieces and nephews, and his granddaughters. His death leaves a big hole in the lives of the many many people he touched, mentored, inspired and enlivened. LeRoy is survived by his two daughters, the Reverend Jane Voigts of Los Angeles/Waverly and Nancy Godinez of Evanston, IL; and his son-in-law Henry and two granddaughters Lucy and Gaby, also of Evanston. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene and his son Doug; his parents Dick and Mary; and his siblings Kenneth, Evelyn and Merlyn. A party celebrating his life will take place on Saturday, May 20 at 6pm at the Waverly Golf and Country Club. A worship service celebrating his life will take place on Sunday, May 21 at 1pm at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vilmar (rural Greene), just up the road from the place where he was born. Memorials may be sent to Wartburg College.
