United States Navy-Ret, 84, died peacefully at home on June 18, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones.A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, Les and members of his family have proudly served this great country for generations, to include WWI,
WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan wars. The tradition continues today with his grand-nephew Benjamin Cutcher continuing the fight in the War on Terror. Les was the recipient of numerous commendation medals, campaign badges, and awards throughout his 30 years of service to the United States Navy. Master Chief Campbell was born on May 14, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri to Lesley and Martha Campbell. In 1949, at the age of 16, Les joined the Armed Forces and attended basic training at the Naval Training Command Center, Great Lakes, IL. After attending numerous training schools, Les was designated as a Naval Radioman. In 1970, Les became one of seven Chiefs to attend and graduate from the first Master-At-Arms training program at the Armed Forces Police Academy, Lackland AFB. The Master-At-Arms would later be known as the "U.S. Naval Security Forces."Throughout Master Chief Campbell's career, he served at/or onboard: USS PCE-894, NAS St. Louis; Naval Station Treasure Island; Naval Radio Station Imperial Beach; USS LST - 53, Pusan Korea; Naval Communications Facility Yokosuka, Japan; and Military Sea Service - Pacific. He also was a member/served aboard the Oceanographic Survey Unit San Francisco; Fleet Weather Center, Kodiak Alaska; the USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD-717); was at ANMCC Fort Ritchie, Maryland; USS Durham (LKA-114); Naval Communications Station, Japan; USS Mars (AFS-l); USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5); and Command Master Chief, Fleet Activities Yokosuka-Yokohama Japan until his retirement in 1979.Master Chief Campbell was a brave and loyal sailor, as well as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Les married Thelma Cabiles Bacud in Subic, Zambales Republic of the Philippines in 1979. He is survived by his wife Thelma; his son Allan (Belinda) and six grandchildren; sisters Ellen Kinberg and Mary Absher; brothers William, Robert, and Donald Campbell. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Lesley B. Campbell, Sr., and Martha Woodford Coddington, and his sister Martha Ann Maloney. A viewing will take place at Ross, Burke, & Knobel Mortuary - Sparks: 1538 C Street Sparks, NV 89431 on June 27, 2017, from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Formal memorial services will take place at Ross, Burke, & Knobel - Sparks, on June 28, 2017 from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM, with burial immediately following at Northern Nevada Veterans' Cemetery.
