SOUTHINGTON - Lester Harold Fox, of Plantsville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, at Hartford Hospital. Lester, the son of Rose and Jacob Fox, was born on Dec. 15, 1923 in Lowell, Mass. He is predeceased by his wife, Nancy A. Fox; his brother, Samuel Fox; and two sisters, Elizabeth Cohen and Sybil Kaufman.He is survived by his son, Mitchell Fox and his wife, Elizabeth, of Richmond, Va.; his daughter, Judy Gordon, of Planstville; three grandchildren, Brian Fox and his wife, Jenna, of Austin, Texas, Paris Godbout and her husband, Matthew, of Cheshire, and Hayley Miller of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren, Marley and Ellie Godbout of Cheshire. Les graduated from Lowell High School in 1940. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. After completing meteorology school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was deployed to Merced, Calif., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946, as a first lieutenant. Following his military service, he earned a degree in mathematics from Brown University. It was during this time that Les found two of the great loves of his life - broadcast radio and Nancy Hopkins. After graduation in 1948, Les took a job as a broadcaster at a local Providence radio station. He met Nancy that year while having professional headshots taken at the local photography studio where she worked. Following their marriage in 1950, they moved to Meriden, where Les became a local radio personality on WMMW. He later became the creative director at WELI in New Haven. Les and his wife were avid travelers, spending the better part of their summers in Weekapaug, R.I., and winters in Montego Bay, Jamaica. His family and friends will remember him for his sharp intellect, insatiable appetite for learning and unmatched passion for good food and travel.Les's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hartford Hospital and Mulberry Gardens Assisted Living Facility for their kindness and expertise.Funeral services will be private.
