He spent his childhood with his loving family, growing up in Houston, with his two sisters, Myrt and Martha. He graduated with honors from Lamar High School in 1940, afterwhich he attended the

After completing his undergraduate education, Lloyd attended Baylor College of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1947. It was during medical school that Lloyd had a chance meeting with Caroline Frances Kemp. It was at a mutual friend's wedding, where Lloyd was Best Man and Caroline was Maid of Honor, that they first saw one another. Later that year, the two were wed at St. Paul's Methodist Church in 1945. In 1950, he completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. For several years, Lloyd served his country as a Major for the United States Army Medical Corps. This included being recruited by Dr. Michael Debakey to manage one of the first MASH units during the
Korean War in 1950-1951, where he cared for American soldiers. In 1953, Lloyd went on to complete a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado and later became a fellow to the the American College of Chest Physicians in 1958 and also a member to the American College of Physicians in 1977 during his private practice years. As a physician, Lloyd worked tirelessly for the benefit of his patients and fellow doctors. Lloyd then spent over 30 years working as the Senior Medical Director and then the Consulting Senior Medical Director for the American General Life Insurance Company. Lloyd finished his long career in medicine by joyfully serving as the Executive Vice President and Medical Advisor to the John S. Dunn Research Foundation, from 1993 to 2003.While the other medical organizations and specific roles that Lloyd served in during his life are too numerous to detail, an abbreviated list would include the Executive Committee of the Harris County Medical Society, President of the Baylor Medical Alumni Association, President of the Life Insurance Medical Directors of Texas, President of the San Jacinto branch of the American Lung Association, President of the Doctor's Club of Houston, the Board of Directors for the Holly Hall Retirement Center, the Administrative Board of St. Luke's Methodist Church, the Governing Board of St. Joseph Hospital, and President of the Texas Club of Internists. For his dedication to his profession and patients, Lloyd was recognized and honored by the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation Gala in 2002, was the recipient of the Ashbel Smith (President of UT) Distinguished Alumni Award also in 2002, as a Clinical Professor Emeritus for Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in 2003, and in 2005, the University of Texas Medical Branch established the "Dr. Lloyd and Caroline Gregory Endowed Scholarship". Lloyd was also an innovator, having established one of the first dedicated Pulmonary Care Units at St. Joseph Hospital. In addition to the admiration of his peers, Lloyd was also loved and respected by his patients and the nurses with whom he worked. Lloyd had a special relationship with the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who helped staff the St. Joseph Hospital. It was not uncommon to have one or two sisters over to the Gregory residence to share in holiday festivities. Lloyd and Caroline also enjoyed entertaining others, often at the River Oaks Country Club.
