Loran Roy Sheffer1936-2015Loran Roy Sheffer, 79, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2015. Loran was born on July 7, 1936, to Lee and Elizabeth Sheffer in Lansing, MI. He is survived by Marie, his wife of 51 years, children: Patty Sheffer, Tim Sheffer, Lee Sheffer, Loran J. Sheffer, Susan Trammell (Evans). He is also survived by his sister Marlene Terry and an extensive family of grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his son, Graham Sheffer.Loran created a successful life for he and his family in the offshore exploration and production publishing industry. Loran was the founder and publisher of Ocean Industry Magazine, Ocean Oil Weekly Report, Drilling Contractors Directory, Offshore Data Services and was part of a four-person team that founded the Houston Business Journal. He was also a long-time publisher of several Texas based running and triathlon magazines, including Texas Runner & Triathlete, Runner Triathlete News, Inside Texas Running and Starting Line.Loran was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame. While a student he received the Outstanding Advertising Student of America award in New York City. He graduated in 1958 with a BS in Commerce. After graduation Loran served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and worked for the Chicago Tribune.As a young man in high school, Loran was the manager of the City of Lansing Sports Association. At age 16, he coached two semi-pro baseball teams to the playoffs and was invited to try out for the St. Louis Browns and Detroit Tigers. He was also a Michigan state 800 meter track champion.Loran was a passionate Notre Dame football fan, a long-time supporter of youth sports and a renowned baseball coach from T-ball up to the semi-pro level. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, the Notre Dame Club of Houston, the Sorin Society of the University of Notre Dame, various oil and gas organizations, was a U.S. Trademark holder and traveled the world for business and pleasure. But among his many accomplishments, his greatest was his family.The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 6, 2015, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079.
