Louis Anthony Gittens Obituary

Jan 19, 1934 - Jan 31, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Louis Anthony GittensSimi Valley, CAAllow me to pontificate (how do you like that word, Dad?) on a man with a remarkable life. Louis Anthony Gittens was born on a ship at sea to Louis Earl Duncan Gittens and Mary Victoria Gittens on January 19, 1934. His unique entry into the world gave him the opportunity for dual citizenship for the first 21 years of life ? as both a French citizen (due to the ship being registered to a French shipping line) and a Guyanese native. Louis grew up in Georgetown, British Guiana as the youngest of three children. His older sister, Joyce (Judson) Gittens preceded him in death and he is survived by his middle sister, Margery (Clancy) Gittens. Although Louis left tropical Guyana as a young man, he never lost the melodic Caribbean accent of his youth (which we fondly remember herein) or his warm and sunny disposition of spirit. He settled in Toronto where he met and married Margaret ?Ann? (Singleton) Gittens. In 1966, when Louis and Ann received Green Cards for permanent residency in the United States, the couple emigrated to America. Adventurous Louis embraced the opportunity and decided to make the most of their immigration. He signed the young couple up for a Greyhound bus special to travel the United States for $99 for 99 days. ?Riding ?de dog? allowed Louis to see the states along the eastern seaboard, the south and the west coast with ?me own two eyes? as he would fondly recall. Landing in Los Angeles, Louis and Ann decided this would be their last stop on ??de dog? and settled in the warm, sunny climate of Southern California. Here Louis and Ann raised their ?tree? (three) children, Gregory David Gittens, Lisa Marie Gittens and Natalie Ann (Gittens) Dilts. Louis worked as an insurance claims adjustor for his entire professional career, a job that allowed him to settle his family in Ventura County. Louis was known among friends and family for his insatiable appetite for knowledge which allowed him to acquire a breadth of wisdom he would generously share with others. Empowered by the spirit of God and Jesus, Louis always worked to help ?udders? (others) and gave guidance to those who needed it the most. Louis passed away on October 31, 2017 surrounded by family and will be remembered fondly by his ?tree? children, their partners and spouses, Tito-James Gates, Ronald Eric Dilts, and Joanie Portugal, his grandchildren, Chad Gittens, Gavin Moody, Kenya Moody, Maayan Dilts, and Jacob Dilts and his great-grandchildren, Mya Gittens and Carl Anthony Gittens. May the memory of Louis always be for a blessing.
