RADM Louis R.Sarosdy, USN (Ret)Rear Admiral (ret) Louis Robert Sarosdy, 89, died on Saturday, April 1, 2017 in Pensacola, FL. He was born on October 29, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA, the third son of Louis J. and Margaret N. Sarosdy. He entered Naval Service in June 1945 as a Midshipman, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Following the end of WW II he entered the U.S. Naval Academy via the Naval Academy Prep School. He graduated from the Naval Academy with the Class of 1951. After completing flight training in 1952, he flew with VF-171. This tour was interrupted by an accident wherein he was run over by USS WASP following an engine failure on a catapult shot in the Denmark Strait. Severely injured he was flown to Bethesda Naval Hospital where he recovered well enough to return to limited duty. He was sent to NAS Memphis to await the return of his squadron. It was during this two month period that he met, and a year later, married Mary Frances Pryor, his wife of 61 years. Following his return to flight status he reported back to VF-171. This tour was followed by an instructor tour at Saufley Field, after which he attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and the California Institute of Technology, graduating in 1960. Tours in VF-142 and VF-132 preceded assignments at DEPCOMOPTEVFORPAC, Armed Forces Staff College and Naval Air Systems Command. Later assignments included COMFAIRWESTPAC in Atsugi, Japan, NAVPRO, Pratt and Whitney, Florida, Research and Development Center and COMNAVAIRLANT as Air Material Officer. Following an AED command tour as Commanding Officer, Naval Air Re-Work Facility, Naval Air Station, North Island, Rear Admiral Sarosdy ran the Depot Management Division at NAVAIR, as Assistant Chief of Staff, Material at COMNAVAIRLANT. After selection to flag in 1977, Rear Admiral Sarosdy reported to NAVAIR as Assistant Commander for Logistics/Fleet Support. He retired from the Navy in 1982.He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, the former Mary Frances Pryor of Jackson, MS; four children; Larry Sarosdy of Virginia Beach, VA, Maggie Sullivan (Bert) of Athens, GA, Anne Yarbrough (Barry) of Nashville, TN and Amy Sarosdy of Spring, TX; grandson, Max Sarosdy of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers, Aurel Sarosdy (Billie) of Naples, FL and Cornel Sarosdy of San Antonio, TX.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 6:00pm at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, 19 N.
