We celebrate an incredible woman and a beautiful life blessed by God
Lucy Cortez Lopez of Pomona, California entered Heaven and joined the community of angels on Sunday, August 6th, 2023. She was 80 years old.
Lucy was born on Friday, April 30, 1943 in Riverside, California. She was raised by her father, Mauro Cortez, in Riverside. Her life was forever changed when she met the love of her life, Jesse Lopez Sr.. They married in 1962 and had seven children. They were together and in love for sixty-two years.
Lucy and her family moved throughout the Los Angeles area for a few years until 1972 when they found their forever home in Pomona, California. Their beautiful home served as a warm gathering place for family and friends for the last 6 decades.
Jesse and Lucy shared countless Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations at their home. The Lopez family celebrations grew as more grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and friends were invited to the table. The Lopez home was a constant source of love and laughter.
Simply, there aren’t enough words in the English or Spanish languages to describe Lucy. She will forever be remembered as the purest of souls. A woman who was admired for her kindness, her patience, her loving heart and her compassion. Her unshakeable faith in God was her identity. She believed in the power of prayer and she would pray throughout the day, every single day. Her faith and family meant everything to her.
Lucy was known as a Prayer Warrior by her family and friends. She was an active parishioner of Holy Name of Mary in San Dimas where she volunteered at the annual festival. Her family and future generations will be blessed with abundant and fulfilling lives because of her prayers.
Those who knew Lucy understood her greatest passion was serving God and being a member of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Her family, faith and church community were the cornerstone of her life and happiness. Attending church with her family was her version of heaven on earth.
Lucy used her countless talents to support and nourish others. She was constantly thinking of ways to help. For many years, along with her neighbors, she would cook warm meals for day laborers throughout Pomona. She volunteered her time at churches and taught us all that love is a verb.
She was an avid gardener, bird enthusiast, caregiver, nurse, teacher, counselor, therapist and chef for her husband and family. She cured illnesses with her fideo, tamales, and homemade tortillas. She also served as a child development educator for all of her grandchildren since 1983. To her grandchildren, she was a second mother with chef-level cooking skills and the kindness only comparable to that of a saint.
Lucy’s husband, Jesse Sr., was welcomed into heaven in 2021. During the years after Jesse’s passing, Lucy had the opportunity to focus her time and energy on her love for gardening and traveling. She also discovered a newfound passion for K-Pop dramas.
As the matriarch of the Lopez family, she led gently and gracefully. Despite the countless obstacles she faced throughout her life, she never had a complaint. She also possessed an unwavering sense of strength and courage. Lucy had such a great sense of humor. Her timing was always impeccable. Most of the time the Lopez family shared was spent laughing and reminiscing about their memories together. She loved to dance and she danced her way to Heaven.
Lucy was too busy loving people to judge them. Her secret recipe in life was always love and kindness. This loss is a profound loss for the Lopez family and her family and friends will feel the absence of her presence for the rest of their lives. However, her love, light and faithfulness will continue to fill their hearts and her memory will comfort them forever. The unconditional love that Lucy instilled in her family will last lifetimes. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue for a thousand generations.
Lucy is survived by her children, Connie (Randy), Jesse (Irene), Carmen (Ted), Lucy (Robert) and Theresa. She is survived by her grandchildren, Jessica, Kari, Jesse, Michael L., Christina, Santino, Jose, Miriam, Christian, Vicente, Jonathan, Michael S., Mishelly, Sophia, Robert and her great grandchild Isaac.
She was predeceased by her husband Jesse Lopez Sr., her daughter Anita Lopez Gonzalez, her daughter Antonia Lopez, her granddaughter Mary and her grandson Rogelio.
There will be a celebration of life in San Dimas, California at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church on Thursday, August 17th starting with the Rosary at 9:30 am and 10:00 am Mass. The burial service will follow mass and the burial location is the Holy Cross Cemetery in Pomona, California. We welcome everyone who would like to come and pay their respects to this amazing woman.
Talking to Jesus by Elevation Worship
“Grandma used to pray out loud
By her bed every night
To me, it sounded like mumbling
Like she was out of her mind
She said, "Boy, this kind of praying
Is what saved my life
You outta try it some time"
And now I know she was right
She was talking to Jesus
She was talking to Jesus
She'd been talking to Jesus
For all of her life"
