BEAVERTOWN Luis A. Mercado Sr., 86, of W. Walnut St., passed away late Thursday, February 5, 2015, at his home. On June 12, 1982, he married Rev. Kathy Mercado, who survives. He was born on June 13, 1928, in San German, Puerto Rico, a son of the late Manuel Mercado Alicea and Josefa Ramos Rosario. Luis attended school in San German, Puerto Rico, and later attended College at the Spanish Assembly of God in Lancaster. He was previously employed at Copes Corn, Heinz Ketchup, the Windsor Cigar Factory, and also Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania before retiring. Luis was also previously the Pastor of the Spanish Assembly of God Church in York, and was the first Spanish Lay minister for the United Methodist Church in York. He was a migrant Chaplain for the York County Council of Churches and was also very involved in prison ministry. Mr. Mercado was very devoted and loved God, his family, and his church. In his spare time he enjoyed working outside in his yard and especially loved his three pet dogs, Alex, Miya, and Laine. Surviving, in addition to his wife are his children, Luis A. Mercado, Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, James L. Mercado, Sr. and his wife, Sheri, and Ana Mercado; stepchildren, Robert A. Haley, Earl L. Haley, Jr. and his wife, Dorothy, Bill M. Haley and his wife, Donna, and Vicki L. Haley Bowen; grandchildren, James Mercado, Jr. and his friend, Lauren Vandersloot, Andrew A Mercado and his friend, Kai Washington, Luis A. Mercado, III (Tony), Ricky D. Mercado, Robert A. Haley, Brodie M. Haley and his friend, Amber Cobb, and Maranda L. Haley; step grandchildren, Zachaney Potter and Scott Wright; great-grandchildren, Leighton Mercado, Lelyn Mercado, Leyni Mercado, Teyanni Mercado, Tialanna Mercado, and Sophia Haley; step great-grandchildren, Taivon Hoskin, Tayvion Washington, Jasmine Wright, and Skyy Wright; and step great-great-grandchildren, Bentley Little and Olivia Anderson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet V. (Haugh) Mercado; one son, Ricky L. Mercado; two grandsons, Cory D. Haley and Jeremy P. Haley; his brothers and sisters, Monserrate Rodrigues Mercado, Juana Antonia Casiano Mercado, Juan Tranquilino Mercado, Eusebia Ramona del Carmen Casiano Mercado, Juana Marcelina Mercado, and Luis Antonia Mercado Ramos; and one brother in infancy. Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Pheasant Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, and on Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Beavertown United Methodist Church, where a candlelight funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Joan Maruskin and the Rev. Dr. Tom Salsgiver officiating. Friends and family will also be received on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 340 E. Market St., York, where the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Joan Maruskin and the Rev. Jose Pabon officiating. Burial will follow at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York.
