Funeral services for Lula Mae Miller will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church with Rev. David McPherson officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (new section). Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. Friday at West Funeral Home. Services have been entrusted to West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.comAfter celebrating 83 wonderful years of life, the Lord released Lula Mae from all her pain and suffering, with her loving family at her side, on October 12, 2016 and she was blessed with a pair of wings. Lula Mae (Brewer) Miller was born on October 3, 1933 to Johnnie Brewer and Virginia (Haskin) Brewer in Christian County Herndon, Kentucky and was one of twelve children. She attended school in Hopkinsville, graduated from Attucks High School and went on to study at the University of Louisville. She moved to Carlsbad, NM where she married Chester Miller on March 8, 1957 and to their union four children were born Yolanda, Janet, Kevin and Marcus. She later continued her college education at Eastern New Mexico University Roswell Campus where she received her Associates of Arts Degree in 1976. Lula started her teaching career as a preschool teacher at Community Action Head Start at Roosevelt School under the direction of Dr. DeVany. She continued working for the school district and retired after 25+ years of teaching. She then worked for Eddy County Courthouse in the Maintenance and Custodial Division retiring over 7 years of service. Lula later took a job at CARC, Inc. working in the Neely House for several years until she retired in 2014. Lula was a loyal member at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church for many, many years. She served as the Jerusalem District Usher Board President as well as the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Usher Board President for a time. She also served as the Choir President and was involved with the Women's Mission. She was a dedicated member of the NAACP and years ago a member of the Women's Division of Eastern Star Association. Lula, after 57 years of calling Carlsbad her home, relocated to Albuquerque, NM in November 2014. Lula was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Virginia Brewer; sisters Gerti Lee Brewer, Thelma Lorine Brewer and Nannie (Brewer) Hutcherson; her brothers John Richard, Robert, L.C., Willie Douglas and George Brewer.She leaves behind her children who will forever cherish her precious memories, her daughter Yolanda Miller and grandson Nick Miller (Amy Miller) and great-grandson Nicholas, Jr.; her daughter Janet Miller Huff and grandsons Justin and Jaren Huff and great-grandsons Javien and Javaun Huff; her son Chester "Kevin" Miller and grandson Joshua Miller and granddaughter Andra Miller; and her son Marcus Miller (Michelle Montano) and "Angel" grandbaby in Heaven. She is also survived by her brothers Albert Lee, LeRoy and H.B. Brewer and many nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
