Lyvonne Mackel Washington, DDS, FACDDr. Lyvonne Delcenia Mackel Washington of Indianapolis transitioned into eternal life on Sunday, November 13, 2016. The world she left will never be the same.She was born on February 22, 1934 to Audley Maurice Mackel, DDS, and Rosetta Lloyd Mackel in Monroe, Louisiana and spent most of her childhood and young adult years in Natchez, Mississippi. She graduated from Bennett College, Greensboro, NC and summa cum laude from the School of Dentistry at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN.Dr. Washington was the first African American female dentist in the State of Indiana. She retired from her profession in 2000, then as Director of the Dental Program for the Marion County Health Department. Before becoming the Department's dental program director, she was a general dentist in many of its community based clinics, primarily at the Christamore House. Earlier, she was in private practice with her father in Chicago and an instructor at the Howard University College of Dentistry.Her many awards and achievements include induction as a Fellow in the American College of Dentistry, Sagamore of the Wabash presented by then Governor Frank O'Bannon; and, the 2012 Indiana Dental Association Groundbreaker Award. She was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the Links, Inc., the Northeasterners, Young Audiences of Indiana and others.Dr. Washington is survived by her husband of 58 years, Wilbert Washington, MD of Indianapolis, IN; sons, Wilbert II (Susan), of Brambleton, VA, and Phelgar (Renee) of Indianapolis, IN; granddaughters Campbell Washington and Rae Trotman; siblings Audrose Mackel Banks of Mumford, NY, Audley M. Mackel Jr. and Gwendolyn Mackel Rice, both of Chicago, IL, and Marilyn H. Mackel of Marin City, CA; sisters-in-law Alma Washington of Beaufort, SC, Odella Royster and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3500 Graceland Ave., Indianapolis, IN. The family welcomes contributions in Lyvonne's memory to Bennett College, 900 E.
